Coronavirus - Taiwan Developments Jan. 2022

Six of the new cases are another cluster tied to the airport. Two people who work with the trolleys. One of them passed to his wife, and then it went to three other members of their family. One is a five-year old, who is actually the first one they found. Not sure if he is in school.

Afaik, No.

No one knows, but I wouldn’t make too many appointments in your day-planner.

Yesterday I had a 70/30 confidence interval that this would be contained.

After today’s events I’m lowering it to 50/50, perhaps 45/55 against containment.

That’s an overly optimistic assessment. I am pretty certain that level 3 is just around the corner.

Just out of curiosity, did you accidentally put the second post as a blockquote when it should have been the first? (The first one sounds machine translated, the second pretty normal.)

I was optimistic initially posting that, but I am less optimistic now reading the reports of the family of 6 being infected. Lets destroy mental health and businesses some more because omicron is ā€œkilling everyoneā€ despite statistically being less deadly. Omicron has completely changed the pandemic — it’s time to change how we respond to it.

Seems not so far - but level 2 has been extended to 24 January.

Yes but the government announced masks are mandatory now. Situation changes quickly. I also noticed that in some more rural areas the use of masks drops off dramatically in general . Which kind of makes sense I guess. And each town had very different enforcement levels during the epidemic period last year, which depended on local officials .

We’ve had kids wear cloth masks at school. I’ve noticed the more ā€œinternationalā€ a child is, the more likely they are to wear a cloth mask. I have a Vogmask that I wear for bad pollution days (no valves) and no one has ever said anything to me. They claim to be N95 but they still fog up my glasses, so I don’t really believe them. I did wear a tan linen mask on a bus once in late 2020 and the bus driver slammed on the breaks shortly after starting to drive and yelled at everyone to wear a mask. I looked around and it looked like everyone was wearing a mask, so I was wondering if he was yelling at me, but then he kept driving. As far as worthless materials to have on your face for viral protection, linen is probably in the top five, but it was very clear we didn’t have any cases at the time, so it was a time where I was just following the law but really didn’t worry about spreading or catching COVID in the community. Right now, I’ll be doing surgical masks or my vogmask if I have to be on public transit for more than 15 minutes

Hmm…it seems that hiking may still have that limited exception (i.e., when you’re sufficiently ā€œaloneā€).

No one knows about that, but I am curious if there have been any announcements over the past week about what could happen - if the plan is to return to what we did last summer, or if there are different ideas of policies.

I’m glad I finished all my oral exams last week. Just two more days of regular classes, so at least I’m 80% sure I’ll be able to finish those off. As for the final exam papers I submitted last week … hm, wonder if those are going to become effectively open-book, taken at home. I’d have set up the tests a bit differently.

Masks inquiry: so are we still allowed to eat outside? Or are we going to have this weird situation where I can remove my mask to eat inside, but can’t do it outside when I’m sitting down miles away from anyone else? (I’ve tried to read that announcement linked above but … I can’t.)

If spread had to happen, I suppose the timing isn’t that bad: universities are winding down soon, so that’s one big avenue of transmission shutting down.

Yes

The Cynic in me says that all these new local cases are all a con job by the CDC too - as it may cause all the oldies to go running to Vaccination Clinics to get the shots that the CDC so far haven’t managed to coerce them to get.

I would be inclined to agree but…

United Front Daily News would have a field day with that info.

And why not an easier variant? Why release the strongest one yet?

Elections coming soon too.

No, it’s just Omicron. Omicron will Omicron. It’s pretty much taken over half the planet in a month. I went from hardly knowing anyone who had COVID in November, to now hardly knowing anyone who hasn’t had COVID (including most of my family).

Yeah Omicron looks like it’s just going to do its thing.

The bright side is a super transmissible, but milder variant is going to speed-run the world towards the end of the acute pandemic stage of COVID (and into endemic seasonal territory like the flu).

This bloody virus is making me even more of a minority!

I didn’t think it was possible!
