Coronavirus--Taiwan developments

Thanks. I still have the feeling that not enough tests are being done and that they have published small results daily on purpose.

Basically, two tests each to verify that yep, they hit jackpot. Total so far 27 cadets are confirmed with COVID-19.

Interestingly, there are only 187 close contacts in quarantine.

God this girl’s voice. Just horrid. Thick as shit.

Even minister Chen is laughing at her.

This is the perfect example of the issues with test sensitivity and sample collection. These are obviously highly probable cases but per the experiences in countries like South Korea, they might test negative 2-5 times before testing positive, or test positive one day, negative the next and positive the next day.

Her questions are the worse. Why is the MND representative not here?

Yes but everyone gets tested a second time at the end of 14 days then it’s seven more days in home quarantine.

He’s in hiding.

I think the Commander was laughing because she had the question(s) from hell and basically covered all the questions for everyone! Lol

More and more of the cases seems to report they already had symptoms before stepping on land.

Love minister Chen. he replies in such a confident way to the most insulting questions.

He’s the ice man. Apart from tearing up that one time he never loses his cool.

Yeah, but many of the “symptoms” were mistaken for normal seasickness that the novice sailors were experiencing for the first time. Headaches, dizziness, vomiting.

Good point. Hadn’t thought of that.

But mild or fixed by itself. Can I say we are lucky? I see those cases in US where 5 year old kid dies, so many seemingly healthy people die within 3 days, in the old country too. Yet her most cases are mild cases, as a matter of fact, 7 out of 10. Even in the enclosed petri dish of a naval vessel, 12 berths a room.

The command center stated that the case 423 was a male in his 20s (intern) who had an abnormal olfactory taste on March 30. Because he was in the same cabin as the case 396 and 397, he took the initiative to notify the health unit on April 18 and sought medical treatment. Negative, second testing on the 20th, confirmed today. Case 424 was a woman in her 30s (military). She had symptoms of dizziness, nasal congestion, headache and olfactory sensation since April 5, and her symptoms improved during the voyage. Second testing was conducted on the 20th and the diagnosis was confirmed today. Case 425 was a 20-year-old male (military) who developed symptoms of runny nose, fever, and headache on March 23 and went to the Central Quarantine for isolation and examination on April 18. The results of the first test were negative.

The command center pointed out that up to now, 27 people have been diagnosed in this mass gathering. The health unit now has a total of 349 contacts, of which 187 are isolated at home and 162 are for independent health management

My favorite was the time he laughed and passed the question on to one of his juniors which was something like, “How will the Coronavirus effect the function of my penis,”

Pure comedy gold!

But look at the dates:

Two of these new cases had onset of symptoms in March (one of them a full month ago), and they’re still testing negative and then positive. This confirms what has been reported elsewhere: this can be a really tricky virus to detect.

Which raises an interesting question: of all the tests Taiwan has performed on symptomatic individuals that produced negative results, how many repeat tests were conducted? Obviously, they’re doing a bunch of testing here because there are tons of eyes on this, but what about the random dude who presented with a fever and cough at a hospital?

PCR test won’t give you positive on day and negative one day. They can give false negative but not a false positive.

Yes, it can. We’re not talking about false positives. We’re talking about people who eventually test positive producing negative results followed by positive results again.

If tests are conducted in a short timeframe, another possible explanation for this is sample collection. If the person has a lower viral load and/or the sample collection isn’t the best, you can test negative only to test positive again if your viral load increases or the sample collection is better the next time.

So a question given the dates of these latest cases is whether those who reported symptoms in March still have active infections or whether the test picked up remnants of the virus that remain.

This highlights why antibody testing is so important too.
