The command center said that there were 34,242 new local cases today, including 16,057 males, 18,173 females, and 12 under investigation, aged from under 5 years old to over 90 years old. The command center pointed out that there were 46 new local deaths today, including 22 males and 24 females, aged in their 30s to over 90s. All of them had severe infections, all had a history of chronic disease, 31 hadn’t received the recommended 3 doses of COVID-19 vaccine and 21 hadn’t received any doses at all. Week to week, the case numbers are already going down—not dramatically but steadily. The BA.5 wave is receding . . .

Numbers of fatalities, as we know, will lag behind case numbers. Sadly, the fatality numbers are revealing something we already knew: there are many vulnerable elderly people in Taiwan who elected not to get vaccinated, or were surrounded by people who thought it would be better if they were not vaccinated.
