Credit Cards for Foreigners - General Discussion

In their terms it states that they follow the industry (?) code of the vendor. I’ve had this happen a few times, plus issues with being on the wrong plan on the wrong date due to being in a different time zone, but I don’t think there is anything you can do about it. Would love to be proven wrong though.

Shouldn’t there be some incentive for the banks to make sure the vendors use the correct codes?

The majority of those credit card reward point systems depends on them being correct…

This is not taiwan specific, you can read about it in english

Happened a couple of times, I just take the L and move on. Guess I’d argue if I didn’t get this in full.

If they want to play it that way, maybe just nick the kettle from your room while you’re there and list it on Shopee? It’s cashback with extra steps.

What’s the credit card that gives the highest cashback when shopping a lot at 7/11, Family marts, and carrefours?

I find the cube card when choosing the relevant spending category for rebate and when using like open錢包 or myfamypay to give good rewards, which can be the. Also converted to miles or hotel points, not just cashback

E.SUN unicard gives up to 4.5% for LinePay.

New card promotion up to 7.5% for LinePay (looks like that promotion has already ended!)

Up to 6% but one needs to have HSBC Premier account or 300k balance, then just pay with the card using JkoPay.

…and one needs to collect 5000 points (roughly $170k spending) first to then redeem them for a $10000 statement credit. Otherwise, it’s “only” 3%.

Hey guys, sorry I’m confused. So I can just bind my HSBC/Esun card to my JKopay/Linepay account, and then any merchant that accepts JKOpay/Linepay will give me the X% cashback? Am I correct? Even in stores that aren’t listed in the ESUN/HSBC “rebate/channels”/the ESUN equivalent?

Pretty much this.
Except it’s not the merchant giving you this but the bank. Since getting my Unicard, my usage of LinePay has skyrocketed!

With E.Sun, you’ll still need to choose LinePay and/or JKOPay as a designated merchant (and you might need to switch the reward plan to the one with a higher reward). And there’s a monthly limit (I think roughly $20k spending per month is the maximum you’ll get rewarded for fully).

HSBC doesn’t require any plan selection - you’ll automatically get 3% on JKOPay spendings without setting up anything first. The only important thing is to choose “collecting points” vs. “statement credit” if you’re aiming for the special “5000 points for $10k” option.

Do note that those promotions are subject to change. And sometimes they have some more detailed terms and conditions. And don’t forget, of course, to use the earned points before they expire - with both banks, statement credit is an option.

That’s good to know.

You mean the 4.5% one, the one that requires us to have 300k in a ESUN bank, right?

What’s this 5000 points for 10k option? I checked the Titanium card page, and the only time 6% cashback is mentioned is that they said 6% cashback when we purchase from selected channels.

ESUN 4.5% cashback seems the simplest & most straightforward so far. I still don’t know how the HSBC 6% works.

There are three different plans (their reward system is really complicated…)

  • 2.5% for 100 merchants / categories
  • 3.5% but you have to select 10 of those 100 (makes sense if you choose LinePay, for example)
  • 4.5% for the same 100 merchants - but you need 30k spending in the last month and 300k average balance in your E.SUN account or you pay 150 points to activate it every month (can make sense depending on your spending!)

And there are different maximum amounts per month.

It’s in the app:

The 6% already assumes you’re doing this - otherwise you’ll only get 3%…

Wait so let me get this straight. One of the 100+ vendors is LinePay, and I can use LinePay to pay at the other 100+ vendors and I still get the same cashback amount? That really sounds like cheating, especially if they have a tier that makes you pick only 10 out of all haha.

For the HSBC, so technically I still “only” get the 3% cashback, but if I collect my points until 5k, I can trade them with 10k deduction, which makes the points worth 10k aka 3% x 2, correct? And purchases through JKOPay counts, as long as the merchant accepts JKOPay, even at channels that aren’t listed in here https://www.hsbc.com.tw/en-tw/credit-cards/products/cashback-titanium/#cashback

I know someone is going to come back with, why would you want to but…

Has anyone ever applied and been approved by any of the smaller banks for credit cards. I remember many moons ago I tried but got rejected.

It was an experiment but I got my app either rejected or kicked back by Entie, TBB, Cota, Changhua, Bank of Kaohsiung, Land bank and Taiwan co-op. I think I tried others too but I remember these ones.

I figured (incorrectly) smaller banks would be hungry for business but I guess not for my business. I didn’t care that much but i was curious at the time. I had the app process memorized so it only took me 5 min to fill out an app.

Back then a lot of the big banks didn’t like to play ball with us either but it looks like that is mostly resolved due to persistence in complaints.

Yes. I’d fully expect them to drop LinePay from the list at some point in the future, though. That’s most likely just a limited promotion type of thing to get you to sign up for the card…

They wouldn’t offer this if they didn’t expect to make money from it. No need to feel bad about potentially putting a dent into the bank CEO’s bonus payment

Yes. Be aware that they might cancel that promotion before you have enough points to use it, though. And you still need to be a premier customer to use it (I think…).

Yes - some vendors don’t accept credit card payments through JKOPay though. At those places, you won’t be able to pay with credit card.

I think @Andrew and @Mataiou applied for some more “exotic” cards just for fun basically.

Check the success story thread:

Other than that, many of those smaller banks are still stuck in the past and won’t even consider applications from foreigners…

Not me, but probably @Mataiou! I just got two of the gold card associated ones and the Costco Fubon card.

Yea I figured they might be easier to get as they were smaller but I found they were stuck in very old ways of thinking. (foreigner bad).

A few of them actually ran my JCIC credit report but I’m not sure if that was perfunctory or not. Got the dreaded denial text. The others mailed the app back to me and didn’t even look at my credit.

Of course, they run a complicated approval process where the foreignness of the applicant is only one factor of many
