They do have tamkang university high school. It’s not TAs but it still has international programs (I think). Tamkang is one of the highest recruitment of foreigners (especially Chinese students before the ban)

If I’m going to shilin I’m taking the mrt. Buses is too slow and I need to pee often.

I miss tamsui , honshuling, bali etc

maybe it’s just me but Taoyuan - with the exception of the backcountry up to the mountains - looks like hell on earth when driving by it on the train. I’ve never been tbf.

Yea, it’s a big city but without any of the big city stuff like mrt.

Well mrt its in underconstruction

It still lacks parks, sidewalks, and there’s no scenic area unlike danshui.

Biked to Bali today then took the ferry over to Danshui. Decided to check out the newer parts of Danshui by taking the rail from the fisherman’s peer back to Hongshulin. The amount of new housing over there is insane! The beach area was pretty nice as well. Relaxed. I think I’ll browse 591 to see how much one can get with like 20-30k budget, at least compared to downtown Taipei.

One thing that was mildly disappointing was getting on the red line at Hongshulin and not getting a seat. Figured at ~3:50PM on a weekday it shouldn’t be that packed, at least compared to the weekend at the same time, but was proven wrong. But I don’t mind standing that much.

Does anyone who live in Danshui also own a scooter to pop up the coast or into the mountains? I wonder how bad traffic would be in the initial section of getting out of the area.

Plenty of buses going to coast, jinshan, keelung or mountain from tamsui station. Monthly unlimited pass wins. Yeah avoid getting on at hongshulin. 20 to 30k will get something really nice with views.
Traffic is not so bad getting out of town, lots of stops and lights tho.

Rush hours in 2 and 101 can be problematic. Sakura bloom season and some festivals cemetery related increase traffic too. Other than that, Tamsui and Sanzhi almost have more roads than cars. So, there’s always an empty small road perfect for cycling. If you’re cautious, I can accept you on a scooter too.

I’ve never found any time where the train to danshui was ever empty. It’s rush hour all the way up to 12am, seriously. I’ve found the best way to get a seat is at the head or tail of the train… for some reason most people get in the middle. Also if you really can’t get a seat get off at Beitou and often there’s an empty train waiting.

They need to get rid of the beitou terminal stop and just run every train all the way to danshui. The line is heavily congested because of all the development where the light rail is, but without any means to alleviate those congestion (such as express trains).

Probably the first road I “discovered” when I moved to Tamsui.

If that road were three times longer, I would consider moving to Tamsui.

Three? Maybe thirty  it’s really short

There were more cyclists than cars on that road today.

Some of those bikes costs more than cars.

That’s a rare sight. Cyclists here usually stick to main-ish roads.

Try the early trains. You can usually get a seat prior to 7 a.m.
