Yeah actually it seems many Taipei locals hate commuting even a little. Everyone would rather live in shabby old apartments near the center than a nice new building that takes an hour by train to the center (more like 35-40 minutes if you’re at like Hongshulin, zhuwei
or Guandu areas)
I’d argue that Taoyuan or Xizhi is better to live in than Danshui.
Because you can take the train from those location directly to Taipei city center, and also they’re faster than MRT. They are also not chronically crowded like the red line is with insufficient services.
Also now the 1200 pass includes them.
I’ll say that the pass definitely makes it more worthwhile than before. But tamsui has access to beaches, nature and decent housing at affordable prices. True that Taoyuan housing can be way cheaper but not the parts accessible by rail at the same quality as the newer places in Tamsui
I must be a Taipei local, because that describes me perfectly LOL! I hate mornings and I hate morning commutes. I’ll take the #charm of these shabbier buildings if it means everything is walkable!
By “charm” are you including cockroaches, mosquitos and mold?

Taiwanese don’t care about beaches lol
Yes and no. At Shalun Beach on a good day you can see many Taiwanese people out there. But at the same time, this forum is primarily made of English speakers.
tamsui has access to beaches
Don’t over estimate the value of access to beaches . Beaches in Taiwan generally suck with little beach related facilities. Especially in the north and can’t even use them all year round.
I know Shalun beach isn’t for swimming but it’s not too bad to just relax at.
There’s a beach that’s pretty close that has good facilities. It’s true you can’t swim year round but I wouldn’t call that valueless.

Look beach front property in Milwaukee was at a huge premium and that has significantly less practicality than north Taiwan beaches.
Everybody with current knowledge in transportation knows that more lanes or more roads always solve traffic problems for once and for all. And we all know that Taiwan is at the vanguard of traffic management. So, it is finally coming:
淡水河北側沿河平面道路工程,淡北道路
Works starting this year. Expecting to finish in 2029.
In 2030 traffic in Hongshulin and Zhuwei will be as bad as it is now, but the traffic at the ends of this road will be worse.
It is going to be a nightmare to go south with the bicycle for 5 years, minimum.
How about improving Red Line frequency instead of this horribly outdated Bigger Road / more carbon solution?
Guy
I could be a bit supportive about this project if they pacify the traffic in Hongshulin and Zhuwei afterwards. Better sidewalks, cycle lanes and bus exclusive lanes (maybe shared with taxis and the like too), reducing and actually controlling the speed of vehicles.
But I’m afraid this is not going to happen. This is just to have more cars running, some votes and probably some money in their pockets. Hey, but carbon neutral in 20xx, bro.
Does anyone know why train frequency to danshui is so low? Xinjhuan line was running trains every 4 minutes at rush hour and danshui line is still more than 10 minutes a train at rush hour. Is there a conspiracy to punish danshui residents?
Hubo una época en que en el norte de Taiwán se hablaba español. Los barcos recalaban en el cabo Santiago o partían del puerto de la Santísima Trinidad.
donde todavía existen habitantes cuya lengua materna es el castellano.
I’ve been living here for several years and I’m still to find that mythological tamsuinés (a Tamsui local whose mother tongue is Spanish due to colonization legacy).
Someone should remove that sentence from the Spanish article on Wikipedia XD.
Tamsui speak Spanish ?lol
And tamsui its a city?
Lol
I just moved to danshui. There’s a huge amount of available housing here and it’s cheap. Danshui in my opinion is probably better than taoyuan because there’s a lot of relaxing places to be especially if you take that 86x bus out north.
But it’s so far from everything. At least there’s a bus 880 that goes direct to xinjhuan, I don’t know if it’s faster than mrt because it seems to be faster than mrt since it’s taking a direct route. It’s also not as crowded on the bus.
Tamsui near the Administrative Center MRT seems like an up and coming area, lots of new buildings and amenities are all close by, pedestrian friendly, and lots of foreigners. They just need to open a western school similar to TAS and it might turn into another Tianmu. The building prices are low right now.
I’d reccomend 857 if you need to go to luzhou, sanchong, or even Banqiao ( though it takes a long time to reach Banqiao)
957 can take you to Shilin and across into neihu
The light rail is slower if you need to get to tamsui station but it comes more frequently and more consistently compared to busses
