Ya, the whole world knows John Lennon as an icon.
But these days, even more people probably know the word icon.
Most of us who learn English, do so through Beatles songs. As long as those songs are played, people will remember John Lennon.
I was still in elementary school at the time, and I remember his death was a big thing back then, people were shocked all around. And this was in one of the furthest corners of the world.

Oh Jesus Christ, man. Stop being deliberately obtuse. He’s an icon to a large number of people. Alright? Maybe not to those who haven’t heard of anything western, but certainly to anyone who has. As for young people, they may not like him in particular, or even have heard of him, but contemporary western music owes a lot to him in terms of influence. Can people have their heroes and mark their passing without someone coming along and claiming they’re insignificant? It’s really rude when you think about it.

When alien lifeforms arrive here in many millenniums to the smoking ruins of our planet they will discover a time capsule with Sergeant Pepper’s in it (original vinyl, 1965 pressing). And they will listen to it, and they will smoke the funny weed that has covered the planet, and they will say “how groovy, these cats were cool”
