Destitute travellers

Recently I’ve been seeing many posts about travelers here saying how broke they are and being basically homeless. I just don’t get it. Why would you come here if you were that broke and weren’t also looking/qualified to get a job?

I just don’t get what people are thinking.

I agree. Guys, get yourself together, get a job and stop living like a tramp.

I’ve not seen any posts like that. What platforms?

Would you rather live in a tent city in Portland with bums or live in an affluent city such as Taipei with very little homeless problems. Probably more lucrative as a bum.

They cleaned Taipei station now? I saw many homeless late night all around the station last year?

Im also confused on why Taiwan? It’s not exactly the most budget friendly place in Asia

Maybe the most budget friendly country that gives you a 90 day visa?

I was living in Kuala Lumpur 2 years ago and when I was in the city centre I would always see “Begpackers” with signs akin to “Traveling the world, please donate”. These wan*ers were sat beside genuine homeless with health problems or addiction problems and its genuinely the most tone deaf thing possible. They truly boiled my blood!

Dunno if “Begpackers” have made their way to Taiwan yet.

If you can’t afford to travel then GO HOME!

Because Khaosan Rd is full of freaks, so nobody would donate as they’re in the majority and equally as destitute or budget travellers if you want to spin it positively? Taiwan it is more of a novelty meaning Johnny from Flin Flon or Bill from Portland get more money.

Philippines has 90 day visa on arrival

Philippines certainly isn’t the country I’d choose to sleep rough in. But it’s reassuring to know I have options if it all goes wrong.

As others have pointed out, you clearly have not been here in a while.

One is its nice weather (not cold that can kill you, or Qatar heat).
But it’s place you don’t get people bother or worry about you or worse police check you. (Though this may depend on where your from, I seen police stop SE Asians on what seemed ID checks, and twice seen a group being deported at the airport)
In Estonia, LT, LV the Police try help the homeless find shelter lest they die in -20 temps, or people will call the police to help (they was once a guy looked dead, but just super drunk… at first some wanted to call the police then we saw he was drunko. I think in Taiwan, Police tend leave people alone.

Well with the money saved on the ticket, you’d probably be able to sleep pretty good for not too much money. I paid like 30 USD a night for an Airbnb in Makati a few years ago

Always playing the nativist card huh? Taiwanese citizen or got tenure yet? Own real estate? I am not being uncouth here, just curious as to how you think physical presence alone denotes ties  Tax authorities–they look at a lot more. So do Bluebloods! You’re not old stock Taiwanese, so why act nativist? An old poster (that hardly posts any more --maybe once a year or two) used to say why do people that leave Taiwan still post. Very narrowminded but representative of the BC interior where he came from.

I will come back in January to Taipei for my daughter’s wedding (she is getting married in Canada first). IS there suddenly a tent city of bums in Taipei akin to Vancouver Island where Pandora Street in Victoria smells worse than Coolio’s momma and where the Marxist jungle smells have extended everywhere with their lawlessness?

In the malls, streets, beaches, parking lots–urine stench, human feces, fentanyl and risks to personal safety and private property. And gotten 100X worse under Golden Pony Trudeau. I don’t vote in Canuckistan, but if I did, I would vote for dead Rita Fucking MacNeil’s beached whale wig   before I’d vote Trudeau.

I stayed here last year in Tainan for $7 USD a night. Double room, business hotel standard, 1 minute walk from Tainan station in the heart of downtown. Its currently about $13 USD a night.

Philippines hotels are oddly disproportionately expensive.

There was one gimp who used to stand in Ximen doing it. 10 yards away from that possibly homeless old man with his harmonica who is usually knocking about around there.

He took the absolute piss. I remember seeing the coppers move him on, then literally 10 minutes later he came back. An absolute bell end.

He disappeared when covid started. Haven’t seen him since.

Wow that is good! Wish I could have found a deal like that when I stayed in Tainan last time.

It’s one of the safest places in the world. Do I am guessing they have less chance of getting mugged or worse while living in the streets. It’s one of the wealthiest places in SE Asia so people might be more willing to take pity on them. Relatively less number of foreigners compared to Thailand/Phillipines etc so less chances of locals getting angry at them. Just some of the thoughts that come to mind why one would choose Taiwan for such a venture

Weren’t you just comparing Portland to Taipei?

You’re all over the place man. Stay focused!
