Dinner etiquette - who is wrong?

It seems to me that he thought he was just offering to let them share the main dish, but perhaps didn’t communicate that clearly. Even if he did, it’s an awkward thing to offer without offering to buy the whole meal, unless you’re talking about good casual friends or roommates or something— not the family of someone you’re ostensibly thanking for a favor and/or possibly trying to date. Especially not in this culture. That’s the bigger issue.

Thats the beauty of language, the fact that it’s always evolving and diverging.
A bit like the OP’s offer for dinner

Especially beautiful when you consider that we are discussing different English meanings of a French word.

Nah, postmortems are more fun

Reminds me of a girl
I know who was talking marriage with a young gentleman who suggested that after they marry they could continue to rent the room he was already renting in upstate New York and they can continue to share the apartment with his college
Buds

Clearly he was not ready for the leap into marriage
She knew it and broke it off

It all made sense to one but not the other
Sort of like this Situ

It made sense in a way but not pertinent to said Situ
