I didn’t know it was commonly used by non Hawaiians. I used it because of the OP’s username, because I was getting tired of saying mixed child or whatever, and because it’s kind of a cool word. I have never used it when speaking.

My cousin, a few years older than I am. He just retired recently. Mother from Japan father from Australia. His parents met and married in Japan.
His children all just regular white people as his wife a fair skinned Caucasian. Sometimes as kids they got asked who was the Asian dude they were with.
Mixed babies often look more Asian in the beginning. When they are growing up their look changes drastically.
My situation was the opposite.
Also, my sister’s oldest kid (3/4 Caucasian and 1/4 Korean) looks very Asian now with his full beard. It was very hard to see anything Asian from his looks before the beard. It cracks me up because he looks so Japanese now.
So I think it’s all over the place. And some genes skip a generation and so a 75% Asian kid can have one or two very Western features, for example.

I lived for 20 years before someone asked me if I was hapa. I had no idea what it meant, and I was even more confused when they explained it was a Hawaiian word.
She was not Hawaiian. I am not Hawaiian. Neither of my parents are Hawaiian. We were not in Hawaii. We were in California. I was so confused.
What’s even funnier is when I was actually living in Hawaii many years later, nobody there even asked me if I was hapa. They only cared to ask whether I was a local.
There is a seemingly normal trend to call half black people “black” because the person judging is of lughter skin. It is also common in blackccommunities to call half blacks some white type term. pretty common everywhere, including taiwan. And pretty universally unimportant outside of various medical realms. especially UV related realms.
Racism doesnt go away until this does.

I remember reading a book called To kill a mockingbird and one line stood out to me. That even one drop of ‘black blood’ would make a person be considered black.

It’s so interesting that skin tone remains so important in cultural and political circles when iit’s truly only important in biological ones.

It’s not a “trend,” and not that strange (unless you just mean people are strange to think that way) given historical context in the US, codified in law in multiple places.

Yep, exactly. it is strange that this trend persists. I find it strange that it does indeed transcend generational barriers and keeps on moving forward with slightly different marketing tactics. This trend keeps on being trendy. It is strange as all fuck, and I’m not talking about just the US and dark skinned folks from africa. like one drop, but it goes far broader than that narrow scope of racist regardless. its beyond bonkers how people find the most pointless things (ie sin pigment) to use to control and dismantle people and cultures. it literally showcases our collective intelligence as species.
