Do you think America will come to Taiwan’s aid if China attacks? Should it?

I’ll ask next time I’m there

Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) told European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that the US is luring China into a military conflict over Taiwan, the Financial Times cited a source as saying.

Xi told Von der Leyen that the US was “trying to provoke Beijing by providing weapons to Taiwan,” but he would “not take the bait,” the Financial Times reported yesterday,

The remarks were made during a meeting between Xi and Von der Leyen in April last year, it said.

Well…what else is he gonna say?

That the US is the reason why there is a China in the first place?

What does it mean???

Trying to paint the US as a troublemaker while trying to avoid tarrifs and trade sanctions seems an easy explanation

It also plays well at home as a reason why China continues to allow Taiwan to have an independent democracy. An optimist might also think that the domestic audience needs to be primed now for the strong possibility that China will not be able to take Taiwan before 2049; very Orewellian, “we have never wanted to take Taiwan, America had always wanted us to invade Taiwan”.

A pessimist would worry. Can’t trust anything that is said, so if Xi is now saying he doesn’t want to invade Taiwan, now is a time to prepare for exactly that

Or he could say that US is the reason why they don’t have Japanese as the official language in Beijing :winking_face_with_tongue:

And that it’s even called Beijing.

Pékin just rolls off the tongue more easily. :stuck_out_tongue:

Times like these makes me think of simpler times…

FT: US Navy Seal unit that killed Osama bin Laden trains for China invasion of Taiwan

If I was Taiwan, I’d be a bit more concerned now than before Trump’s election. It’s not very plausible to imagine Trump going to save Taiwan.

China is a “rival” but he seems ok supporting local hegemons (e.g. his support of Russia vis a vis Ukraine). He’s probably not happy about how much money the US is spending on maintaining bases in Korea Japan and the Philipines.

I honestly can’t see why he would care about Taiwan, regardless of what any of his China hawks advisors tell him.

My sense is if China invades, he’ll just let it happen.

I’m definitely looking at options in other places. Haven’t bought a one way ticket out, yet

The Biden and Trump Administrations are focused on limiting China’s ability to wage war and to contain Chinas aggression. This is done economically for now. and as a backup the entire Asia Pacific region is crawling with western navies. China can’t fart without the Allied Forces knowing about it

Yes the NYT is viewed by some as a cesspool of left-wing thought, but this article should send a chill to any Taiwan observers. Replace “Europe” with “Taiwan”, “Russia” with “China”, and “Putin” with “Xi” and you’ve got a serious security matter here.

(opening excerpt here)
President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia shocked the audience at the annual security conference in Munich in 2007 by demanding the rollback of domineering American influence and a new balance of power in Europe more suitable to Moscow.

He didn’t get what he wanted — then.

Nearly two decades later, during the very same conference, top officials from President Trump’s cabinet made one thing clear: Mr. Putin has found an American administration that might help him realize his dream.

Comments by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance raised fears among attendees that under the new administration the U.S. might align with Russia and either assail Europe or abandon it altogether.

Such a shift, analysts say, would give Mr. Putin a previously unthinkable victory far more momentous for him than any objectives in Ukraine.

“Since the dawn of the Cold War in the late 1940s, the Kremlin has dreamed of pushing America out of its role as the cornerstone of European security,” said Andrew S. Weiss, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “Putin surely is savvy enough to pounce on any openings provided by the new administration.”

The presence of American troops has been the underpinning of 80 years of peace in Western Europe since the end of World War II. But in a speech in Warsaw on Friday, before his arrival at the conference, Mr. Hegseth warned European leaders they shouldn’t assume that the U.S. will be there forever.

Later in the day, at the Munich conference, Mr. Vance delivered an even scarier message for many European attendees: The enemy he sees isn’t Russia or China, but Europe itself.

And to answer the thread title question: Yes

The US along with all the Allied Nations will absolutely defend Taiwan, it’s not even up for debate. As a matter of fact they already are and have been doing so for decades.

Misrepresentation of U.S. goals in Europe. The U.S. is setting the stage for tbe EU to strengthen itself and increase its commitments to national defense. This would ultimately be very bad for Russia and China.

You casually refer to the “Biden and Trump administrations” in a way that suggests they have similar policies. Given the last 27 days since Trump’s inauguration, how on earth can you imply such a thing?

Maybe Trump will maintain the status quo in the Pacific, but Biden was the status quo, and Trump is a threat to change it. The change, if there will be one, in my opinion will be to Taiwan’s detriment.

Maybe. Or maybe Trump just doesn’t care about Europe.

Policies are the same with regard to containing China and limited China’s ability to wage war.

See the Trade War and Blacklists that Trump levied against China in the first term, and Biden continued and expanded, and Trump further expands in the second term.
