Banks routinely give me NT$2000 bills if I withdraw big amounts.
I haughtily refuse NT$200 bills given to me as change as I don’t frequent ladies of the night. 
Never, not once, have I seen a NT$20 coin.

Most people react with novelty because they are relatively rare.
Yeah first time I am hearing about this angle. Got my first green note after seeing it in a cash drawer at bafang and asking the cashier if I could trade for it lol.

No gangster connections as far as I know; the old-school association of those NT$200 bills is prostitution.

I seem to remember using NT$ 50 notes in the past, they were blue, I also remember using NT$ 1/2 coins too.
20s were popular coins for around 6-12 months and then disappeared, same with 200s very popular at the start and then just you didn’t see them. I have hardly ever seen 2000s thou, they never seemed popular at all. I think they were just too much for carrying around daily and getting change from.
