Drunk Driver Foreign Student

Yeah, me too, Auntie, I’m pretty doubtful here.
Official “deportation” is pretty rare, it’s a big freakin deal, diplomatically and legally.
Especially for what is still technically just a misdemeanor.
Declining to renew a visa is something entirely different, and much more easily accomplished.

For all these cases, foreigners are required to sign a document agreeing to not leave the country or even change addresses until the final judgement is issued and penalties completed.
There have been cases where people’s ARC expired during the time they couldn’t leave the country, and so they couldnt renew or extend and ended up having to leave.

I disagree. My friend and coworker Recieved the letter and I read it. First offence and the police, judge, and lawyers told him he’d be ok… Just pay the fine. He paid the 90,000$ and thought it was over. A few months later a letter was sent both to him and to the principal of our school stating that his work permit was being revoked and that he had 2 weeks to leave taiwan.
He had no other run in with the police, I’m sure

Your “friend” got the maximum fine and spent the night in gaol. I’m guessing he was belligerent or there was something about the case that :banana:ed off the powers that be.

Most of us get 30,000 and a temporary driving suspension.

You’re agreeing with me.

Deportation is where one is taken into custody until such time as they are escorted to the airport by the authorities and physically placed on the plane.

This ain’t that.

Right, same result though

This used to be true. But since the laws were changed to be more strict… Maybe 7 years ago, getting kicked out of the country seems to be the norm. Do you know anyone who has been charged recently?
It’s also different for married foreigners I assume

Anyway, I’m no expert but I know first hand about that case, and I’ve heard of several others with the same result. I know a couple guys who got a slap on the wrist before the newer laws came in
Curious to know if others have more information

fair enough, I guess all my mates got busted a few years back now.

Some Vietnamese had to left due to drunk driving a (electronic) bicycle maybe last year. But WDA’s decision to cancel his/her work permit was turned over by a court, iirc.

He was drunk. He was driving. He was caught. He’ll probably have to pay a large fine. He wasn’t being chased by a bear or an unruly mob. Just going to 7-11. Drinking and driving is dangerous and stupid. What part of that is a “sweeping generalization”?

I think he’s referring to you calling all Taiwanese shitty drivers in the post directly above that one (a generalization which has more than a grain of truth to it, but still a generalization).

So is getting run over by a cartoon steamroller and getting folded into a giant paper airplane and flown home to your Mom.

But you wouldn’t call them the same thing.

I’m saying you’re right, most times they likely cancel the work permit and give a deadline to leave the country. Deportation is more like sending a unit to your house and taking you to a plane in handcuffs.
What would you call it? Administrative deportation?

Has that ever happened here?

It appens to SE Asian laborers all the time.

Also, I’m pretty sure that’s SOP when any foreigner completes a jail term.

Ah, I guess I should have stated: “A significant amount of Taiwanese are shitty drivers”. Shitty drivers can be found everywhere and every country and culture generates their own kind. Having lived here for a few years though, I have noticed that there is a particular kind of shitty driver that is quite prevalent. One that I have never seen before. Perhaps if I were to live in Vietnam, China, or some other less developed South East Asian country, then I wouldn’t be picking on Taiwanese as much.

SE Asia is much worse in general. But Taiwan is pretty bad. The sidewalk scooters, red light runners and buses that think they own the road all give me anxiety.

SEA doesn’t have the infrastructure Taiwan has. A shitty driver on a dirt road absent of markings of any sort is bad enough but a scooter careening down the sidewalk near a school adjacent to an eight-lane road with functioning traffic lights and abundant street signs is a special sort of stupid.

@the_bear Can you confirm this?

You have no idea what happened being as drunk as you were.

You’re fortunate drunk driving laws in Taiwan are largely a joke and the most you’re going to get is a six-figure fine.
