Earthquake ! 2004

That was strange tonight. I was working on progress reports on my living room sofa and heard the window to my kitchen rattle and felt the jolt. The report I was working on went flying out of my hands when I jumped up. What’s going on here? Three major shake-ups in one month?

don’t worry, IOU, the more small burps, the more pressure gets released down below. the big one aint coming for another 10o years or more. relax. this is just nature letting off steam . hiccups. go back to work. progress.

Glad I waited 'til last nite to see LOTR3 … great special effects

first one of 2004, somewhere in Taiwan Island… could u feel it?

My God your quick. It just happened a few minutes ago. It was a quick jolt.

guanxi guanxi

Nice gentle swaying here. CWB is a little screwed up right now. Only the chinese grahpical report is up so far. It was off the Taidong/Hualian county line:

(edit: added english links, text reports still not up)
(edit: english text report is up now)

I’ve been here two months, and that’s been two perceptible tremors (in Taipei - I imagine they were rather more noticeable elsewhere  ). Does this kind of thing happen so often people get rather blase about it - “oh, earthquake, feels like a level 2, ho hum” or does it put you on major alert every time? I’m still diving under tables at the slightest shake  I’m not overly fussed by flood, bushfire or typhoons… but earthquakes are a scary thought.

If you’re at work is there this whole “nope, the pictures are only swaying, not time to dive under anything yet” thing going?

Yeah, people are really used to it.
Today’s quake was so short, there was no time to think about it. The one a couple of weeks ago was a long-drawn out and very creepy one.
Also, remember, the higher you are, the worse it feels. I live on the 11th floor, so there every earthquake feels like a big one. People on the 2nd floor probably have a better perspective on how serious a quake is.

Hi All,

I’ve set up an E-Mail Alert system that mails out information about any earthquakes in the Taiwan region above 4.0 as reported by the CWB. These alerts usually go out within 5-15 minutes after an earthquake hits. You can subscribe to either English or Chinese language reports, or both. Messages are sent as plain-text with links to the graphical and text versions on CWB’s web site. Both are sent in Unicode/UTF-8 encoding. While most current mail clients support this encoding, you may have trouble reading the Chinese reports if your mail client doesn’t support this encoding.

Daasgirl, I can sleep through them now. If I feel some kind of shaking, I look at the string for the window blinds to see if it’s really an earthquake. Otherwise, it’s the kids jumping in the recess room or that damn construction site next door.

Aftershock? 9:38 AM. Just felt a little swaying, not to much though.

Very sliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight post Valentine’s Day Jolt, around 9 thirty pm. I was in Page One. Ouch!

It’s all the fault of my roommate, the bastard. Shit, there they go again. Sixth time. How’s a bloke supposed to get any sleep?

This is the first one I’ve felt in a while. Just a little wobble in Taipei:

A little wobble? Not from where I was sitting - on the 7th floor.
Luckily, I wasn’t at home, on the 13th floor. Would’ve scared me no end.

The Tv stations are giving completely unconfirmed reports about one person dead after hit by falling rocks in Taroko.

Awesome. Nice to have confirmation that I indeed wasn’t hallucinating earlier. That was a nice little rumble, but in a twisted way I’m still waiting for one that will compare to any of the big So. Cal quakes I’ve been through. :smiling_imp: :stuck_out_tongue:

I experienced my first earthquake this afternoon while my wife was getting her hair cut. It was really weird. I was waiting in a hand-shaped chair; suddenly I felt as though someone were tugging on the chair. I looked around and saw no one. Then the chair skipped a few inches across the floor. I looked up and saw all the dangling lights swinging around like mad. All the Taiwanese staff looked around and laughed. My wife did not even notice, and I had to tell her about it later. :unamused:

I was with my girlfriend so I though it was me. Or at least she thought it was me. So let’s not tell her about the earthquake to spare my male ego.

Wow, cool ac_dropout,
That must be the first time your girl has felt the earth move.
