Economic Relief Money for US Citizens Living Abroad?

I DHL my tax returns every year, in addition to maintaining a US bank account for business purposes. Received my free money by direct deposit in early January.

okay, but typically you don’t need to provide bank account info to the IRS when filing taxes from aborad, unless you are one of those lucky expats who earns above the foreign earned exemption. anyway, how did you set up a bank account with the IRS to be able to get a direct deposit? I got my first stimulus check last year by mail and so far this year, nothing.

IRS had a feature on its website for registering a US bank account for direct deposit of stimulus payments.

Bank account information for expats would normally only be provided to the Treasury Department.

do you have a link or anything where you can register a bank account with them? Someone posted a link above about that, but I couldn’t find it, I ended up going around in circle.

also, I now notice a key word in your post… “had” so this is not there any more?

May still have, I don’t know, as I used it in November I think and haven’t had further need to utilize it.

The “Get My Payment” IRS tool and how to provide current bank information

The Treasury has created an online tool (“Get My Payment”) where direct deposit information can be supplied to the IRS. Here is what you should do:

  • On April 15, 2020, the IRS set up this online tool that allows you to track the status of your stimulus payment, and it allows you to provide your direct deposit information. (To learn more, read IRS Launches Online Tool to Track the Status of Your Stimulus Payment and Have It Direct Deposited.)
  • Add the bank account number of your account.
  • Add the routing number of your bank.
  • Do not include a check number.
  • Double-check that you have entered the correct numbers; entering an incorrect number could result in a significant delay of payment.

You can use the “Get My Payment” tool to find out the projected date for when your deposit is scheduled to arrive in your bank account. The “Get My Payment” tool will also tell you if you’re set to receive payment by paper check, along with a scheduled arrival date in the mail.

The tool, however, doesn’t always work, and your inquiry may result in a “Payment Status Not Available” message, or it may need to be modified to take into account the second stimulus payment.

While “Get My Payment” allows you to give direct deposit information to the IRS, you cannot change bank information with the IRS if it already has an account for you on file. This is to help protect against potential fraud. You also can’t change your form of payment if the IRS has already scheduled it for delivery.

I can’t find anywhere to enter bank info. I just get the “status not available” on my second check and nowhere to enter bank info.

That’s because the IRS already has you scheduled for payment.

You also can’t change your form of payment if the IRS has already scheduled it for delivery.

so that means that I’ll eventually get the $600, most likely in the form of a check, whenever they happen to get around to it?

Yes, the check’s in the mail.

somewhat reassuring. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy this classic Tom Petty tune.

Could be a business opportunity here for some enterprising foreigner. Like a payday loan program for stimulus checks.

Those $600 checks were mailed 2 months ago. They will not be mailing anymore.

The IRS is directing anyone owed stimulus money who hasn’t received it by March 31st, to file for it in your 2020 taxes.

If you already filed your 2020 taxes, but did not claim the missing stimulus rebate, then you can file an amended return.

The online system for entering your banking info has been suspended. All future stimulus payments, as well as back payments, will be issued through the account information you provide on your most recent tax forms.

No bank info on your taxes? then you will be mailed a physical check to the address listed on your most recent tax forms for any future payments.

a better idea would be a remittance service using cryptocurrency. but that’s kinda off topic.

dammit… really regretting being lazy about my 2019 return. gonna have to do that. but it’ll still be another more than a month before I get my hands on my Taiwan tax info.

If you earn less than $75K USD a year in Taiwan and have no US income, just claim zero income and enter roughly what you make here. super easy. no need to wait for Taiwan tax info.

I guess… but I typically report based on what I make. in theory, you could make up anything and they just take your word for it. so might as well, eh?

posting this here in case anyone needs info. Unfortunately the “create an account” link is a dead link.

here’s an article on how to claim back stimulus money in case you haven’t gotten either the 2nd or 3rd checks.
