Economic Relief Money for US Citizens Living Abroad?

Can you update here later?.
I’ll try soon…just trying to understand if I can use this way…it mentions…( Do NOT continue here if:… You were married at the end of 2019 and are not submitting information here with your spouse.) Not sure what that means. My wife is Taiwanese but not a U.S. resident and has no SSN…so I wouldn’t be trying to claim anything from her anyway. But we have 2 kids that could be claimed.
Also not sure if this will work for me as I haven’t filed in decades. I probably wont even show up on their database.
Did you just claim 12,200 for the year?

It didn’t ask me why I didn’t file. It did require a bank account, presumably an American one. I also have two kids in Taiwan but never got them a social security number. The form requires ssns for anyone you claim as a dependant.

here’s another helpful link, they have set up a system for non-filers.

Thanks for the info. It may be worth getting their SSNs if possible. AIT should have the info/forms on how to do that.
I’m just hoping you overlooked something on the bank account requirement. I haven’t had one there in decades.
I’ll try and get in later tonight and start the process.
According to the article a bank account isn’t needed…hope that is correct…

" Entering bank or financial account information will allow the IRS to deposit your payment directly into your account. Otherwise, your payment will be mailed to you as a paper check (that will [slow the receipt of your check]".

I’ll update here also

No bank account, no direct deposit.

Ok, I can accept a check by mail

Anyone know if my kid who’s gonna be born in a couple days will qualify? That would be dope

Doesn’t leave a lot of people who filed but don’t put a bank account since they don’t owe any taxes? Meaning the people who make under the taxable threshold and actually probably need the money very quickly?

Did you register your kids’ birth abroad with AIT?
Get passport?
One of those steps (I forgot which one when I did it) should get them a SS card with #.

Yours leads to the same page but the beginning page gives different details…it also has loads of replies so should answer many questions.

I’m not sure but a quick search suggests you can, but maybe have to wait. Search for …Newborn stimulus check… and there are quite a few results.

Yeah, I remember that pretty much being a package deal. And in order to get the birth certificate and or the passport you had to also apply for the SSN

Here we go! Don’t like socialism, but hey a check from the government is welcome, even though not needed!

How do you people don’t need it? Kind of a douche move to post something like this in this thread. I don’t agree with the insane stimulus but I’m not judging people who take it as it’s a hard time for us all. Not sure why you’re laughing.

I know I need it and I’ve paid at least that much into the system but don’t qualify for SS…so I’ll just be getting back some of what I put in.

Thank you!

cant get it to accept. Very straightforward now that I’m doing the correct form but just keeps sending me back. can’t see anything that’s missing at all except my wife’s SSN which she doesn’t have one. It’s doesn’t specify whats missing.
Any suggestions???

Ok, finally got it to go through. filled in the unobvious …(country code)… with my local city postal code. That got it to accept. Now wait 24-48 hours for an email.
It has Taiwan listed on the country drop down menu :grinning:

For those of you using this system who are non- filers, do you really want to be back on IRS’ radar? If you ever plan to return for any substantial amount of time, you should reconsider this action.

  1. You are obligated by law to report your income more than USD 10,000/year

  2. The IRS is seriously understaffed and massively outdated tech-wise (apparently they have computers from the 1970s in some areas), so your chance of being audited for any reason is already really slim.

  3. If you have been paying US taxes, or will be paying US taxes, you probably want to get your money from this relief check, cuz your tax dollars will be paying for it.

  4. If you haven’t been paying taxes, do you really think they’re not going to notice when you suddenly start paying again if/when you return to the US?
