In weighing the relative complexity of ICE vs electric, we also need to consider the availability of infrastructure, cost/time of refueling vs recharging, fire & safety hazards, computer code, etc.

Purely in terms of the electric vs. ICE drive, I will agree the electric drive is simpler.

I am 100% with you there. but its not in anyway an EV vs fossil fuel thing. all cars are going more automatic which causes untold issues. windows are the ones that annoy me in my new truck. plus the computer is so smart the local mechanics are unable to fix it, only mitsubishi. my locking mechanisms are so smart they automatically lock the doors and set the alarm when no one is around, so when one uses the keys to unlock the alarm goes off. a particular problem when only the non chipped key is around and you need to drive an hour to the dealer, if they are even open, to turn off the damn thing. They say this cannot be changed. I sense bullshit. The dealer also told me other mechanics cannot login into the computer to tell it the oil has been changed for some reason. Everytime I go back to the dealer I must have the most blank dumbfounded look on my face.

New cars really have gone too far into the fucking people for more money aspect. It’s like they are all going towards subscription service while swinging by Apple Hostage Avenue onthe way.

Machinery as well. John Deere is a classic example of a good tool gone rotten.

25 million lines of code in the F-35, and 100 million in a luxury car (c.f. Windows XP - 45 million lines of code). Yep, no chance of a bug at all.

BSOD in Win XP means you sip your coffee, reach over and hit the reset button at your leisure. Hurtling along at 150 kph and a bug hits your luxury car, or if you are so (un)lucky, supersonic in a F-35, a bit different outcome.

The lock thing on the Tesla may have happened on a gas-powered luxury car but the fact you have a lithium battery fire that is difficult to put out, has its own oxidizer, tends to burn directionally (like a jet exhaust) and emits toxic fumes diminishes the chances of survival.

Yeah the John Deere case is an example of a company abusing technology to maintain a synthetic monopoly.

Back to Musk, I clicked this thread expecting him to be getting raked over the coals for his dangerous, careless stunt of a tweet regarding Taiwan. Starting to not be so surprised at the stunningly consistent slant anymore here. Musk could spit betel nut in the face of some posters here and they would probably thank him for the free sample, the orbiting seems that strong… :sweat_smile:

Ya that’s more what I was getting at. It’s not just Tesla and john deere, the entire industry is going that way. I would say generally speaking nearly everything manufactured is going this way (easily.breaks, moving towards need to be fixed by the manufacturer or their affiliates). it’s a super big problem in my mind. But companies just want to keep selling regardless of consequences to anyone else. not great. I wouldnt single Tesla and the d bag in charge on this front, certainly not just EV or luxury cars. I drive a cheap as fuck big dirty truck. nothing luxurious about it other than I get locked out of it too and the computer is forcing customers to pay the company more each time :frowning:

Self responsiblity is certainly not humanities strongest selling point. Good post. Both bad. the entire way of transport really needs to be overhauled. But I would think electricity as a base is the way forward. Storage and production still have a ways to go, no question.

Gasoline is finite, lithium can be recovered. There may be no money in the latter, until there is.

I think localized pollution is the lesser evil, as it is easier to moderate, compared to millions of vehicles of various make, model, and maintenance.

There is no oxygen inside lithium batteries. Yes, oxidation and reduction are processes by which batteries function, but oxygen has nothing to do with anything. ~ 30 % of the gas evolved during thermal runaway is hydrogen, though.

Well its a shame the auto industry went down the reciprocating ICEs when they did. You may be aware of the Chrysler Turbine Car, whose engine could run on most fuels. To quote the Wiki on the engine:

The fourth-generation engine, installed in the Chrysler Turbine Car, was put into use in 1963. This engine runs at up to 44,500 revolutions per minute, according to the owner’s manual,[4] and could operate using diesel fuel, unleaded gasoline, kerosene, JP-4 jet fuel, and even vegetable oil. The engine can run on virtually anything with combustible properties and “Chrysler claimed the turbine could gulp everything from peanut oil to Chanel No. 5.”[5] The then-incumbent President of Mexico tested this theory by running one of the first cars—successfully—on tequila, after Chrysler engineers confirmed that the car would operate successfully.[6] No air/fuel adjustments are required to switch from one fuel type to another and the only evidence of which fuel was used is the odor of the exhaust.

In theory during fully reversible charging/discharging, the oxygen atoms just get shifted around:

LiC6 + CoO2 <=> C6 + LiCoO2

However the reversible reaction is the thermodynamically metastable one; the minimum energy configuration is the formation of Li2O and CO/CO2. This is the reaction that happens during exothermic runaway, amongst many others.

I think what he really wanted to say was that the batteries have the catalyzer inside.

I suspect that EV isn’t the solution for long distance transportation. Current batteries are too heavy, have low energy density, are dangerous, need to much space, and as I said above their energy is only as green as the source. Plus while a gas tank in a car is just metal or plastic, the battery itself means loads of pollution.

It’s definitely the lesser evil for a place like Taiwan with Taipei being chock full of scooters and pollution. Back home in the relatively empty and clean countryside, i can see the argument against it but in disgusting air filled Taipei? There’s no debate from me.

He needs to get a laptop and the third party software to access the ECU/ECM, there are some good IT companies around that can get into almost all ECU’s, ECM’s.

But back in the days many car manufacturers had already specialized tools for their car repair, so third party tool makers started making them.

That’s how it always was for our older trucks. no issues. But mitsubishi themselves said other mechanics cannot do this anymore. They may have been pulling my leg to try and get me to go there, so far they have come across pretty slimy so it wouldnt surprise me. But our local mechanic that I always use said he also cant. Might be that truck model is only 2 or 3 years old and the 3rd party stuff is coming soon?

either way, it seems shitty (greedy) and sometimes borderline illegal (like tesla locking cars).
