The ones that speak English always seem to be the ones that ask me if I want to go get a “massage”, “Taiwan girl”, etc. Whenever I get in a cab and the driver greets me with English, I get my prepared responses ready… “I’m on my way to meet my girl friend”, “I’ve got a girl back home,” “I’d rather have Taiwan boy”, or the best one, pretending I’m on the phone…
I could imagine this happening in Thailand, but Taiwan? Come on, the days of blatant sex trade in Taiwan are pretty much a thing of the past. Sure, you see the occasional barber shop pole with no actual barber shop, or the teenagers and 20 somethings hanging around Ximen Ding waiting for that phone call, you hear stories of KTV’s as fronts for brothels (I have yet to have this officialy and factualy confirmed by both foreigners and taiwanese alike, so far I see it as an urban legend of Taiwan)…but cab drivers soliciting sex services? I find that hard to believe. What part of Taiwan did this happen in and how long ago?
Quarters, I personally know some of the girls who do this work. So no, it is not urban legend.
There are also 4 VERY undisguised brothels right next to my man’s shop. And a huge one next to Guting.

The sex trade is huge here, but in ten years I have never met a pimping taxi driver. Never. Come one arion, how many times has this really happened to you?

I had it happen 3 or 4 times when I was living in Tainan. I haven’t had it happen to me at all now that I’m in Taichung.
Ok, perhaps I should clarify. I was talking in reagards to the sex trade in Taiwan for Wai Guo Ren. I know that Taiwan has a huge sex industry for the locals, but compared to places like Taiwan and the Philippines, Taiwan is hardly a sex trade destination for foreigners. So it wiould and did surprise me to hear a taxi driver in Taiwan soliciting sex services to a Wai Guo Ren.
I still have yet to hear of a Wai Guo Ren (Western Foreigner) entering a KTV seeking sex and being successful. I have yet to hear of a Wai Guo Ren picking up one of those teenage street workers in Ximen Ding, and I have yet to hear of a Wai Guo Ren who had the balls enough to actually walk into one of those seedy barber pole establishments and ask for something other than a haircut.
Actually alot of locals goes to Thailand for sex… police is seriously cracking down on sex trade and its somewhat risky.

The last time I checked I was Wai Guo Ren. I was getting offers from Tainan taxi drivers within the first month of being in Taiwan. I’m not sure what kind of place he would have taken me, but I know some of my colleagues had offers from taxi drivers to bring girls to their hotel for them.
I’ve never picked up a street worker in Hsimending.
I’ve done all the others though, long before I got married and settled down, of course. I’ve also had countless offers from taxi drivers over the years, bellhops knocking me up in hotels in the middle of the night, etc. I can’t believe you haven’t.
No one would ever think I needn’t to pay for it. ![]()
Those bellhops do sound like awful cads. Did they offer to marry you afterwards?
This is strange though. I mean I spent my first two years in Taoyuan. And once, when traveling alone, I had to spend the night by myself in a love hotel…and still no one came a knocking.
Well, I will be on the lookout as I tour the country for the next few months.
arion, my apologies for doubting you.

When did you get your “gender reassignment surgery”, sandman?

Reasons 1,234,346 as to why namahottie is leaving Taiwan. Cabbies don’t ask me anything except if I’m married or have a bf? And those questions ONLY come from the bing lang drivers. So, make that another 1,234,347 reason as to why to leave Taiwan. :s
Total accumulated time in Taiwan 10 months.
Times I have been asked if I have a GF by a TW Female = more than I can count.
Times I have been asked if I had a wife by a TW Female = 5
Times I have been asked for my cell phone number by a TW Female = 5
Times I have been asked if I want some nooky nooky by anyone other than my GF (now Wife) = 0
Times I have been glared at, given the evil eye, been told off in Taiwanese, Mandarin, and who knows how manyother languages for being a foreign guy with a Taiwanese woman = 16 (and expected to grow)
The most recent experience of being yelled at by a Taiwanese was 2 nights ago. Was with the Mrs. Quarters and her mother, 9:30pm, crossing the street near eslite by 101. Only people crossing the street, lots of traffic…some nut job sticks his head out his car wondow and starts yelling obceneties at us. I ask the wife what he is shouting and she says to just move along quickly. Once we get to the curb, she says he is shouting bad words and threatening ME for being a foreigner with a TW girl, she also siad he called her a whore for selling herself out to a foreigner and betraying her own kind. I naturally turned around and gave our not so friendly admirer the one finger salute and went along our way.
This, and other experiences, leave me with the definate impression that a lot of local guys (especially middle age ones - Taxi Driver age) do not look keenly on us foreigner folk being with Taiwanese women. Hence why I find it hard to belive that taxi drivers are offering to sell out their own women to western foreigners.
I have been to XimenDing many times and have seen all sorts of people, but have never been able to spot a street worker. I have been told that they “blend in” and do not openly proposition people…they have their secret signs, codes, and numbers…most communication is done through text messageing and calls. I’ve never actively been on the prowel for such women/girls so I don’t know how accurate my observations have been, just casual observations I guess.
What I do know for sure is that there were two barber shops that were definately questionable (I seriously doubt they were offering haircuts) near where I live. Both are now gone. One is now an OK KTV and the other is now an empty building. As with other places in Taipei, these institutions seem to be closing shop. This is just my observation and is why i said “seems to be”.
Taiwan will remain Taiwan with it’s Motels, Spa’s, etc where you pay by the hour, rather by the night. There will always be prostitution in this world no matter you like it or not, however Taiwan just doesnt have what other SE Asia countries have to offer western foreigners.
(in my opinion, that is a good thing).

Cost=Priceless.
*sorry it just begged to be mocked…

What I really want to know is… how are the drivers and how is their English ?
Shurely you meant ‘How does one find the drivers’?
Stop posting at work, Buttercup.

I’d be happy to do my work, if I were.
