Subject: Homogenisation of European Security Levels - a review
The English have reacted strongly to recent terrorist threats and have raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.”
Soon, security levels may be raised again, to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross”. Londoners have not been “A Bit Cross” since the Blitz, when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “ A Bloody Nuisance” . The last time the English issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was during the great fire of 1666.
The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide” . The only two higher levels in France are “Surrender” and “Collaborate” . The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France’s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country’s military capability.
Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides”.
The Germans also increased their alert state, from “Disdainful Arrogance” to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs”. They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose”.
Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.
The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.
Bill Maher said on one of his shows last spring, after the Virginia tech shooting that these things (group terrorism and individual terrorism) are done by assholes who “can’t get laid.”

I think JD’s post was in jest anyways. Bill Maher is a comedian. He sometimes has some good insights, but this isn’t one of them.
The fact that these men are doctors proves that Islamic terrorism is not limited to poor and disenfranchised Muslim youths. Look at the profiles of the 9/11 hijackers and you’ll see the same story. Educated, financially successful, middle-aged men with families. The Palestinians bristle with pride when such men become suicide bombers against Israel. Palestinian television is filled with profile pieces of the Arab financier or engineer with a big house, two BMWs, and a wife and five children who leaves it all behind to become a martyr.
The political scientist Samuel Huntington argued in his “Clash of Civilizations” that the jihadi movement is not primarily a movement of the poor, but of the middle and upper classes in Arab society. The anthropologist Scott Atran has studied jihadism and suicide bombing, and concluded that poverty is not the genesis of suicide bombing. See his scholarly article on the subject here. Note that he expresses confusion over the continued belief that poverty creates terrorism, despite no evidence to support it.
But Atran fails to understand the machinations of the liberal mind. You see, my optically-challenged amphibious friend, inconveniences like “facts” are not relevant to liberals. The idea that poverty=jihadism, compounded with the idea that all poverty in the world is the result of Western “policies,” whatever those may be, is simply part of the liberal religion. Religion is guided by dogma, and dogma as a rule is not subject to reform. It would not matter one iota if these doctors were multi-millionaires, nor would it matter if teams of Muslim doctors, business executives, attorneys, etc. began blowing up every bit of Britain. The liberal mind cannot comprehend such actions, because poverty=jihadism=the-result-of-Western-policies. Do you understand? I hope that’s all clear now.
Old story: the “revolutionary vanguard” is primarily comprised of well-educated individuals wanting to place themselves between the downtrodden masses and their oppressors. Very heroic; self-gratifying. Many of the foot soldiers do come from the poor and uneducated, but not all. Disaggregate the mass and distinguish between the various individuals and their particular reasons for signing up… it better exercises your mind than the broad, sloppy strokes Huntington likes to employ.
Not nearly so much fun as yet another anti-liberal screed though.

Thank you Jaboney, for yet another completely uninformed post. If you had actually read Atran’s article, you would know that it is not only the leaders of the movement that are well-educated, but the suicide bombers themselves. The 9/11 hijackers and these doctors were likewise well-educated and gainfully employed.

What’s more, given a core component of what is required of a doctor is advanced problem solving, these fools and their pathetically flawed violence are indicative of a real crisis in the NHS.

You say “many,” but “not all” are poor and uneducated. But that doesn’t square with the research. Only a minority of suicide bombers are poor and uneducated. Of course I suppose your terms are vague enough that they can be interpreted either way.
But just so I’m clear, you do admit that the existing research disproves the notion that poverty is a leading cause of jihadism and suicide bombing, right?

You’re missing the point. Muslim suicide bombers, whether in the US, Britain, or Palestine, are at least as educated as the surrounding societies. And many of them are working professionals making good money, middle-aged, married with children, with damn good prospects for the future. The myth of the poor, uneducated, jobless, hopeless, disenfranchised single Muslim male with nothing to do but blow himself can finally be put to rest, right? No research supports that stupid myth at all. If you read Atran’s article you’ll see that he refers to other researchers who have come to the same conclusions as he.
Brits aren’t taking this latest attempt very seriously, which is understandable considering these men failed. But what if our British compatriots on here had just lost Grandma or Mother or Sister because she got blown to bits by Ahmed with his suicide vest? Brits, French, and all other European (and North American) countries with growing Muslim populations can expect more and more of these attacks as the Muslim populations swell -and some of them will succeed.
I wonder how long it will be before Europeans and other Westerners wake up to the fact the the Islamic faith teaches that all non-Muslims are depraved scoundrels who deserve to be conquered and burn in Hell. And hey maybe, just maybe, there is a connection between these hateful teachings and attacks carried out against non-Muslims.
