Useless to buy a big bike here until you are able to drive on the Highway. A gold wing is a touring bike not useful for commuting.
The old scooter/motorbike debate still has a little life left in it.
Also regarding sport-style bikes, Hexuan wrote on another thread that he can get his knee down while riding his Yamaha FZ150. Iâm sure I could on mine too if I were brave enough. FZ and FZR 150s have to be among the best handling small bikes anywhere (I would have thought Cagivas or Aprilias to be as good or better, but ten times the price if you can get them here at all).
I saw a foreigner on a new Grand Dink 250 the other day. It didnât actually look that bad on the road, with a rider. He proudly told me âYou can ride it in the mountains!â 250 scooters are pretty tempting â still pretty convenient but better for long distances as well. I donât really ride my bike very hard and prefer fairly relaxed cruising so I think I be alright with the limitations of a scooter. Only the price puts me off.
with the grand dink 150/250, the transmission box is so low to the ground that u donât get much flexibility in the angle of attack when cornering. what that means is if u corner hard, u risk scraping/denting/breaking open the transmission cover. esp possible when carrying a passengerâŚ
so while u can take it in the mountains, donât expect to go too fastâŚ
i took my scooter up the route that sandman suggested on sunday: roosevelt>xindian>pinglin>yilan>keelung>jinshan>shimen>danshui>shilin
when u come down the mountain overlooking yilanâŚthe view is absolutely gorgeous, same with the rocky mountainsides that the #2 Coastal Highway runs along between yilan and keelungâŚsimply stunning emerald cliffs⌠entire ride took about 6 hours door to doorâŚno stops, other than bathroom break and getting lost in keelung for an hour and a half⌠
great day to ride, lots of traffic, though if u manage to pass the bus/truck thats blocking everyoneâŚu get a completely clear open road for a few kms before u run into the next bottleneckâŚ

The Ego has that kind of lump or ridge in the footwell that holds fuel. That looks as though it would keep the weight low and centered, and also act as reinforcement to stop the bike flexing too much. Do you think thatâs so?

Still, the Grand Dink has some neat features and very comfortable seats.
On a busy road, the safest place to be is ahead ahead of a big slow vehicle. Still, if itâs not safe to overtake or you donât have the power, sometimes you have to be pragmatic and let the car drivers have first try, because if you donât let them pass, theyâll try and do something crazy that will endanger you. If youâre keeping a reasonable braking distance from the vehicle in front, a lot of car drivers will try to nip in and take that space.
I did this quite a lot when my Mum was a pillion passenger and we were going up the Hualian-Suao road â I would keep central lane position when it wasnât safe for cars to overtake me then as soon as it was safe, Iâd pull in a bit and indicate right. That minimised the aggression from car drivers and kept us both safe.

Your general point is fair enough though â a big chunky bike is not that well suited to what you can do at the moment here. This doesnât necessarily relate to the engine capacity though â some large capacity sport bikes are light and maneuverable.
Kymco 125 cc - People / Herself
Does anyone have one of these little beauties?
My scooter is a Sanyang (Honda) 125 cc with a two-stroke engine. The top speed is about 100.
Iâm wondering if 100 is a ânormalâ top speed for this size of two-stroke scooter.
If anyone else has a two-stroke 125 cc scooter, how does your top speed compare to my scooter?

same ground clearance. i was cutting real nice arcs over the curves in the roadâŚand then i managed to roll over the center(which has those annoying fish eye style glass dome reflectors instead of painted lines) of the roadâŚand managed to REALLY scrape the tranny box over the glass domesâŚnot good, box cracked and i gotta go buy a replacement soonâŚ
u can get a pretty decent lean angle out of itâŚi was just trying to push it a bit harderâŚguess not such a good ideaâŚfyi: lean angle is NOT anywhere close to a FZR or RZRâŚbut still pretty decent for such a large scooterâŚ
My RG 250cc has approached the speed of soundâŚ(Last sunday road from Ping Xi to Fu Long last straight away)
âŚdunnoâŚhow fast itâll go I was riding with Farmer Jeremy of Bike Farm fame (Yes! He actually rides on occasions)on another ride and passed him at 100KmâŚ(His engine ceased!)
Iâm going to start using Quantum Physics next time to determine the speedâŚwatch out for those stray dogs meandering on the highwayâŚ(down on the farm we call 'em âTaiwanese speed bumpsâ
got a helmet hickie from the strap across my throat and my hands froze to the hand gripsâŚchange my shorts when I got homeâŚWho wants to race?
Saw a Honda Silver Wing on the way to work today. Apparently itâll do 110mph.
Kymco Apex plus 150 : top speed 110km/h
very good brakes as well !

Thats about the speed my Kymco 125 should top out at. Iâve only put about 500 kms on it now, so Iâm going easy but have easily hit 85 with more room to go.
I recently tried to purchase a Kynco EGO 150 and could not buy one.
I was told that they were only sold to the Police here on Taiwan. No EGO 150 sales to the general publicâŚshameâŚnice 'scooter.

the shop owner just telling u some bs so that u buy one of the models that he has sitting in his shop for monthsâŚyou can purchase a new ego 150 or 250 from the local kymco shops, but there is a waiting list(1-4 months) as the ego is now âexport onlyââŚtheres rumor that they will stop production soonâŚ
for more information on the kymco ego, heres a local forum dedicated to it(all in chinese) - tw.club.yahoo.com/clubs/The-EGO-race
have had a Yamaha Vino 125 (4 stroke) for a couple of months and easily got it up to 100km/h with 2 up. I reckon it could do at least 110-120 with just one person wringing it out.
Itâs a nippy beast around town too.
My 4-stroke FZ150 will still do 120 after 12 years⌠Canât be bad to that really. But I could definitely do with more low-end grunt. (Ooh, er!)

My information came direct from Kymco headquarters in Kaoshiung. The model I purchased was 5 days off the production line. It was sent to a shop in Tainan where I live that has the capabilities to service this new model.
The Kymco regional manager came over to my place and took me and my wife over to the shop to do the deal.
EGO 250âs were explained to me as being available in Taiwan, but the EGO 150âs, as the factory International Sales Director (who does speak english) were not avaliable in Taiwan due to being sold to the Police. EGO 250âs - waiting list. EGO 150âs - not available.
I did not want a 250cc model, althouh I do like the EGO 250. It was either a EGO 150 or the SR G4 125cc I got.
This was straight from Kymco headquarters.
Thats all I know.
I took a 2-stroke RZX and bored it our to 150cc, put a high compression pipe, bigger jets on the carburettor, ported and polished it, and changed to stiffer shocks. Off a red light I could beat the Honda NSRs to about 100k, afterwards they got me with the RC valve.
My personal record was 140+k with my wife (then girlfriend on the back) on the highway/airfield ć°ĺčˇéon the way to Kenting. I then put the connecting rod through th the top of the piston due to oil starvation and detonation.
It was a long, hot walk home pushing a dead bike

140? Mine could do that and more as is (and did not too long ago, though Iâm getting more cautious in my old age). No passengers, though, as I hate riding with someone else on the bike.

From the man with the 250 2-stroke who is famous for riding like a granny. Get that GSX750 fixed and sell the crotch rocket to a younger man (me).
