The reason why I came to Taiwan was 23 years old, and I was 18, when we started. When we broke up I was 25 and she was 30.
It was fine for the first 4 years, until her family got involved. They were traditional, southern buddhist, had money and the age difference didn’t go down too well with them. I felt a difference indeed appeared when she went back to TW and started working. I pedaled faster to keep track and level up. That wasn’t a bad experience at all as far as I’m concerned (I always love a good challenge), but the family was still hoping I’d behave and be the bf she “should” have, meaning 5 years older with a job and quite a bit of dough.
At some point later, I was dating an ex-model who turned 34 as I was 25. That felt alright since she was clearly in it for the sex and not much else.
For a few months I also courted a 31y old TV presenter who proved to be too tough a cookie for me. Seems like I had a tiny fighting chance, but ultimately couldn’t compete with that actor she was already “seeing” :ohreally:
My 40+ vice-president also made some moves in my direction. Although I admire her knack and achievements, that was clearly not gonna happen :no-no:
Since that I got in a really nice relationship with a girl who is actually younger than me, by 3 years. That’s the first time ever I’m with somebody younger and she clearly is worth it. She is really gorgeous, smart, and open-minded. I suspect that to get a girl of that level, you have to get them young (only the TV presenter was of that caliber).
What I’m trying to expose here is the importance of “providing” for girls in TW. Overall, an asian family will first look at a girl’s bf as a “provider”, it clearly is their first test. And girls repeat the process. You need to be dependable, with a good education, good family, a nice job… and to be older so that you can “guide” her through life.
This is the traditional Taiwanese social contract. Guy brings experience, money and guidance, girl brings youth, caring and loveliness.
It just is a problem for western guys who actually prefer to have somebody “equal” to them. Hence going for older women.
If for any reason Taiwanese girls start thinking that they are out of that social contract, that marriage game, things like age difference stop mattering.
