Forumosa.com and Social Media

I’m over here ROCKING HOUSE in the social media realm and I’ve been thinking about Forumosa a little bit lately. I’ve now “jokingly” told two people that I’m going to come back and buy Forumosa.com and pimp it out properly.

Content is king and there is no question in my mind that Forumosa leads the pack in this arena, but there are about ONE MILLION different things that this website could do to Increase Pimpness (aka user experience) and increase the $$$ that it brings in.

What I’d like to hear are any thoughts/ideas the regular users (old and new school) have about how social media could be used to make this place more pimp. Also, if there are any threads about this topic already, I’d love to be directed to them.

Forumosa has the talent to (just a couple ideas off the top of my head…)

Have a blog that covers political/business news and shit.
A YouTube (or page on some other video site) that makes regular video content about whatever the fuck ever.
and…

Well, I gotta jump in the shower… I’ll be back when I have a bit more time to rant. I just wanted to get the party started a little bit.

dork :raspberry: but you’re right a lot could be done to improve the user experience on here

I think the youtube thing would be great. There aren’t many Taiwan videos on the site, at least in English. Someone has to have a DVR hooked up to their TV. The western world needs to see these penis infomercials!

Mark my words. I’m going to buy this site and pimp it out properly. (not joking, that’s why it’s funny)

God almighty! PLEASE not You’reCrap! I never ever even look at that site anymore, since the chances of the videos actually playing are just slightly less than bugger-all.

Hey MTK. Long time no see (or maybe I’m just not paying attention).

Unfortunately I can’t see YouTube from work. :frowning:

No, it’s long time no see. I haven’t posted anything here in 37 years (that’s web forum time of course).

Which site is that? YouTube? Doesn’t have to be YouTube for hosting video, there are a ton of sites. Definitely doesn’t have to be my videos either. I’m still shocked at the fact people like to watch my horribly produced content with me rambling worse than I ever did here because it’s one long flowing unedited stream of nonsense.

The point is that it would be pretty cool if there were some people putting videos together about current events and happenings in Taiwan. All that is needed is a $4000NT video camera and a windows PC.

People seemed to have taken to Facebook quite well. I’m overwhelmed with ideas of what I’d be… What I’ll be doing when I’m back in Taiwan.

I might (for fun) start up some kind of Taiwan Community from here just to see how well I could do at it. I’ve always wanted to get an online something that would facilitate interaction between Taiwanesers and Big Noses.

Uh oh! Just bought Taiwaneser.com… LOOK OUT! lol

More naked women?

Women are dangerous though…

Would you include Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter as Social Media? Or just as Social Networks?

In my opinion Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, Flickr etc. are all social networks. The “social media” part to me is pretty much video (and live streaming video, flash animations, music, pictures, copy writing etc.) and the way the different networks play with each other.

Free and easy video hosting is probably the largest game changer. I’m sure a number of people are telling themselves that social media has been around for AGES and it’s just not catching up to the masses. This is DEFINITELY true for social networks (BBSes, discussion forums, blogs, etc.) but the huge change is easy media hosting (ie social media).

Think about it. MySpace blew up because bands were able to host music for free. Before MySpace, meeting friends online is what creepy people and geeks did. After it was about finding new bands/getting your bands music out there, it was OK.

The media part is the pictures, the video and the sound. Think about how fast one can build rapport with a well crafted video vs. text on a discussion forum. On Forumosa I would have to spend weeks/months reading one persons post to get a feel for the person. After watching 2 minutes of someones video I can say to myself: douchebag, neutral, or this dude is pretty cool. There are obvious pros and cons to this vs. mountains of text BUT, in my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons.

Anyhow, I guess the distinction I would make is social networks connect people, social media transmits the message.

:grandpa: Forumosa doesn’t need to be pimped up. Content is King and the web is a text based medium. Don’t let this fancy bling-bling multimedia crap fool you.

Myspace is dead. Twitter will die. Forumosa will always be here as long as it’s not bought out, pimped out, or prostituted.

Miltownkid, you always flirt with those ‘social media networks’ but you always come back to forumosa. See?

The day Forumosa became a “social networking” site, as in sharing lists of friends and contacts, would be the day I stopped participating. I like the forumat just as it is.

“Social media”…?

you haven’t been paying attention.

It’s socialism. We won’t have it.

Lets see Forumosa.com raise $36,000 for a charity in a month with it’s discussion forum format (OK, I haven’t done it yet, I’ll let you know what the real number is at the end of the month).

You can’t do THIS: socialmilwaukee.com/ Without “social media.”

Honestly though, I LOVE discussion forums. More than the current version of social networking websites BUT forums have been around for DECADES now. A lot has been learned in that time to make them better.

With the web you can have your cake and eat it too. I also think you’re focusing on the wrong aspects of what social networking is about. Quite honestly, Forumosa is one of the best examples of what it’s all about. Current social networking websites are a horrible example of what it’s all about.

Actually I have been. You might be surprised at how much I’ve been paying attention. I have friends at all different levels of government with friends at all different levels of government telling me about… Well, that sort of thing. And I sift through what I can on the web.

Besides, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to do the math… National ID+Google+Mandatory Tracking on Cellphones+RFID=??? But it’s going to be interesting. I also love “conspiracy theories” and watch/read anything ranging from [Alex Jones] to [David Icke].

You’d also be pleased to hear that a friend of a friend is slowly turning me “republican.”

I never thought about it that way… I need to start building some Capital Networking sites!

Even Taiwan (perhaps ESPECIALLY Taiwan) won’t escape the mounting wave which is “social networking/media.” I’m not talking about the douchebaggy marketing/sales stuff either. The current generation is growing up in a world that is TOTALLY different (in terms of how it communicates and interacts with the world). I’ll be riding that wave. Many won’t (can’t?) see it coming.

Why was this thread from over a decade ago at the top of my Forumosa feed? Also, very interesting how good of an understanding @miltownkid had about how important social media would become back in 2008.

I fixed the quote blocks in these posts, which bumped up the thread. I forget how to make those edits without bumping up the thread

I also add the underscores to the usernames when fixing the quotes so they automatically direct to the right user
