Forumosa.com and Social Media

I thought most people run ad blocking programs anyway?

They shouldn’t have to. It should be the reverse, they need permission in writing. Like how normal law works.

Or a public alternative that is free and clear. Might make more sense and save money.

Nice 5 year mull

I got rid of all my social media accounts other than direct messaging. I came to the conclusion that they - at least for me - are a negative.

The straw that made me disable facebook was the targeted advertisements. I don’t think its a desirable situation to have my computer actively trying to manipulate me. Like if you briefly mention in one message that you ā€˜painted the living room’ as an example, then that is going to be a months worth of DIY ads in the stream. Use sky scanner: it crunches the numbers decides you are going to Japan and you are like: why is the feed full of amazing places to visit and cheap houses for sale in Japan? Later you are in Japan walking around and its like your computer sent you there with an algorithm? No thanks big brother.

But even besides that, what is social media? Guess it is what you make it to be, and for me that was a waste of time. A giant bin of stuff that is not important for me or my goals in life. So I am just going to stare like a frozen rabbit into this bin of electronic reflections instead of actually living my life, breathing actual air and stuff? Again I think I will pass.

Not sure why the toe is still dipped in the forumosa water. Maybe because it’s less ā€˜pimped out’ like the OP mentioned. The ā€˜democratisation of technology’ is a phrase I heard recently in another context.

My train of thought has somehow brought me to Leonard Cohens jazz police playing on the old marble machine. There must be a connection

For similar reasons I deleted FB years ago but then they got smart and made it mandatory to have an account to even browse FB marketplace. So I have a shell account that I use for marketplace. They are happy as they get a login to count for their sponsors
The apps are deleted though

So many restaurants now just have a Facebook account, so I’m stuck with what info Google Maps provides. Frustrating.

FB is almost unusable as a social friends feed these days. The old days you would see a friend’s feed. Now it’s full of so many ad posts it’s crap.
I just keep that shell account for stuff like this, I just don’t use it for posting
