Free pornography, a discussion

I guess you’re right. Besides, it’s not really credible that he’d understand a word like “geriatric”, is it?

That’s more Uncle Joe’s specialty, but let’s not derail the thread.

@jinyu derailing? I prefer the term “transcending, into archaic homo turtle heaven”

That actually sounds way worse than my intended meaning.:laughing:

derail away, i want you to think this is a nice topic that you can discuss in any way that makes you like it

There’s sex, there’s politics, all that’s missing is religion to make a trifecta of taboos

I’ll pray it doesn’t come to that, then…

sh!t.

There’s a taboo about discussing sex? :thinking:

Don’t even need to mention the other two in Ireland of 1920 to 1980. Religion all the way, and some awful abuses by people who are holier than thou.

@jinyu refers to taboos in polite company, not your taboos… :wink:

Uh, I think we’re way past that anyway…

Well seeing as we’re now all so uninhibited and all I want to get back to the question of animal pornography. Don’t tell me I’m the only one who finds this kind of stuff incredibly erotic?

It comes down to three arguments against in my mind. The sexual addiction argument (which is strongly related to the dopamine comments above), the unhealthy sexual relationship argument, and the objectification argument.

I find the first argument to be strongly infused with Victorian ideals that need to be questioned. Exposure to porn causes teenagers to masturbate? I don’t think so. They may do it a fair bit more with some porn thrown in to the mix, but who cares? I just don’t see the problem. Humans are interested in sex; whatever. The dopamine addiction problem is an interesting one, and is also related to all sorts of other screen based issues (Facebook, Instagram, etc.); which is another topic altogether.

The unhealthy (sexual) relationship argument needs to be addressed. But in my mind, it isn’t really that big an issue. There is what is on the screen (movies, videogames, etc.), and there is real life. If the person in question has learned to respect other people and their opinions (including in sex /relationships), it isn’t something that is all that hard to separate from the fantasy of online activities. (Maybe this is the actual problem here, people’s inability to separate online fantasy from real life dealings?).

The third point, objectification, is more complex. I personally think an element of objectification is necessary in sex, or fantasy / intoxication with another person becomes difficult at best.

From a feminist point of view:

Martha Nussbaum (1995, 257) has identified seven features that are involved in the idea of treating a person as an object:

  1. instrumentality : the treatment of a person as a tool for the objectifier’s purposes;
  2. denial of autonomy : the treatment of a person as lacking in autonomy and self-determination;
  3. inertness : the treatment of a person as lacking in agency, and perhaps also in activity;
  4. fungibility : the treatment of a person as interchangeable with other objects;
  5. violability : the treatment of a person as lacking in boundary-integrity;
  6. ownership : the treatment of a person as something that is owned by another (can be bought or sold);
  7. denial of subjectivity : the treatment of a person as something whose experiences and feelings (if any) need not be taken into account.

Rae Langton (2009, 228–229) has added three more features to Nussbaum’s list:

  1. reduction to body : the treatment of a person as identified with their body, or body parts;
  2. reduction to appearance : the treatment of a person primarily in terms of how they look, or how they appear to the senses;
  3. silencing : the treatment of a person as if they are silent, lacking the capacity to speak.

In the beginning of modern porn, much of this was true. Today, woman are gaining a strong voice/choice (look at MyFans and Chaturbate here) in how these things work, and have agency in porn. The economic choice (or possibly lack of one) could be argued for sure, but that is different.

The biggest question with objectification is simple: are you treating the person as a person? If so, many of the points above dissipate. And as I age, I find people way more attractive, and sexier, than any object.

For me porn and prostitution pale in comparison to sex with someone I love.

You know how when you pet a female cat and the cat sticks their butt in the air?

When I was in high school someone told me it was an invitation.

Probably better to end this narrative there, TL…

Continuing the cat narrative. Apparently male lions will kill lion cubs. Was watching that today on the discovery channel.
