Frustration with a Taiwanese Woman

I met my current girlfriend one year ago, after coming out of a long-term relationship. At the time, she had a working visa, and long story short, we ended up living together. When she was fired, her visa ended, and I decided to relocate to Taiwan, as a way of changing my life entirely and having new challenges. I was lucky enough to get an internal transfer within my company, so I was able to move here with a job. During the first few weeks, we lived at her parents’ house, and eventually we moved into a flat in Taipei.

During all these months, I have experienced a lot of cultural shocks, although I think a big part of them is related to her personality. I could talk about those as well, but I would rather get straight to the main issue I have with her, which is sex.

We are both over 35 years old. She has had several boyfriends and friends with benefits, whereas I have only been in two previous relationships apart from her. She is very open-minded when it comes to sex and has even acted as a kind of counsellor to her friends because of her experience.

However, one unfortunate consequence of her past was that she dated an ex-boyfriend who was a womanizer, and she probably contracted HPV from him.

Despite being very open-minded about sex, she is actually the type of woman who mostly prefers hugs and kisses. She gets tired quite easily, so she often prefers sleeping to having sex. For her, sex can feel like a hassle because of the amount of energy it requires and because she feels she has to take a shower afterward.

When we first became intimate, she told me that she only experienced sexual desire once in a while, maybe once a month. Because of that, it often takes a lot of effort for her to become sufficiently lubricated. She is also quite tight, which can make penetration difficult, and she tends to experience pain during sex even when she is in the mood.

As a result, she does not seem to fully enjoy penetration. She also tells me that my size is big for her, even though I would personally consider myself average by Western standards.

At the beginning, even when she was sufficiently lubricated, she could become dry very quickly. Because of that, she preferred me to finish quickly, almost as if sex were a burden for her.

Interestingly, some of her friends seem to have similar issues with their partners. Their male partners sometimes take a long time to finish, and the women worry that it might be because their partners do not find them attractive enough.

Another thing I find interesting is that when I flirt with my girlfriend and tell her that she is beautiful, she usually responds by saying that she is just “funny” or cute. She puts Korean models on a very high pedestal and seems to see them as examples of what truly beautiful and sexy women look like.

Our sex life was like this from the beginning, but after some time the situation improved. There were periods when we were intimate several times a week, although overall it has always felt like a roller coaster.

Recently, I had to return to my home country to take care of some pending business, and I stayed there for more than a month. During that time, we had video calls almost every day, and we missed each other a lot.

She became very excited about us travelling together, holding hands, and enjoying different types of food when I returned. Because of that, I thought the time apart might increase her sexual desire, but I was wrong.

When I came back, she met me at the airport. We were lucky enough to catch the last train and MRT home. It was very late, so we simply went to sleep because she had to work the next day.

The following day, we tried to have sex, but she was sleepy and tired from work. She told me that she was already experiencing some pain even before we attempted penetration. At that point, she became frustrated, so continuing was basically impossible.

The next day, things went better at first, but then she suddenly became dry again and we had the same problem.

She told me that it was her body, not her, and suggested that it could possibly be related to menopause, even though she is not yet 40. She also told me that mentally she was not in the right place and reminded me that, for her, sex is not everything.

Of course, sex is not everything for me either. However, I told her that even elderly people can still have sex despite certain physical difficulties.

I suggested buying lubricant or other products that could help. I also suggested that she visit a gynecologist or women’s clinic, or perhaps get some blood tests done, but she seems to avoid the topic as I am the one just talking and she just nods but she barely says what she is thinking.

For me, the situation is becoming increasingly frustrating. During one of these attempts, I was unable to finish, and she only realized later—after taking a shower and getting ready for bed—that perhaps she could have helped me in some other way instead of simply ending the intimate moment there.

I have never previously been in a relationship with an Asian woman, and I do not want to generalize, but does any of this sound normal or typical in Taiwan or East Asia?

I could go on with many more anecdotes, but at this point I think this is more than enough context.

Are you insane? :runaway:

Guy

I think it’s a common issue amongst different partners , different levels of sexual interest , now and when people get older, and also from work and busy schedules. It’s absolutely nothing to do with being Asian. From what I’m reading she does love to spend romantic and intimate time with you and was excited to see you again, that’s a great positive in the relationship.

She should listen to your suggestions and you can proactively buy some things for her to consider to try.

I didn’t have trouble with her parents. In fact they have accepted me as her boyfriend. It’s funny as I cannot communicate with her mother except a few words in chinese, but it doesn’t stop her of speaking me like I have fluency in her language. I can talk a bit in English with her father. She also has an older brother, and even that he works in IT, we have never talked more than a formal greeting, so sometimes when nowadays we pay them a visit and stay a weekend once in a while she has to translate me sometimes what is the topic about but of course I cannot fully engage with them as I wanted.

Then at some point she told me that her mother was concerned about having a foreigner as a boyfriend due to the cultural differences, but the father just told all that she is already old, so this was as good as it gets. For me it’s funny and interesting that a woman after 30s is considered as “broken” in the traditional mindset.

In my experience women here when they settle down they prefer to sleep or watch movies. Maybe that why prostitution is so popular?

U ever tried jerkin it?

Yeah, I don’t see red flags regarding her attitude towards me. I wish she could engage more in certain topics, but I consider she’s truly interested in me.

I wouldn’t like to know that I am forcing her to have sex only when I want and she’s going through just to satisfy me even when she doesn’t want. Of course if I see that she’s on the mood and not tired (or just barely), I take the lead, but I always told her that this is a thing of 2 and she doesn’t have to carry on just to satisfy me because otherwise I don’t feel any desire if it’s not mutual at that moment.

In the past, that ex-bf that was a womanizer (she found out that he was cheating on her and immediately broke with him) forced her to have sex almost every day and she remembers that even as boring as she just wanted to finish, at a point that even once she was watching something in her smartphone.

I understand that this is not a cultural shock and can happen anywhere but there are some aspects that I would consider as part of the general mindset from here. Like some people getting married just for family or social pressure without loving each other (she told me that before that she didn’t experience true love as his ex-bfs didn’t say cute things or treated her nice or let her be herself), or even living in the same house or flat but more as a flat mates than a functional family because each one as different taste in food, different schedules, different hobbies or likes different TV series or even like to sleep a different times so some are even sleeping in different bedrooms like her parents. And the list goes on and on.

dude of course lol but it’s frustrating to finish in this way just because we cannot continue and I still don’t know if she wants to “fix” or understand the issue or just accept that it will be like this from now on.

Yeah sorry I was just pulling ur chain hahahaha

her father told me that not long ago it was common for almost all men to cheat her girlfriends or wives even with prostitutes. Not sure if that’s their case too but honestly, I don’t see them getting along even as friends so I wouldn’t be a surprise.

Doesn’t like 80% of the global population have this? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Most likely but of course it’s going to spread even more if that guy slept with a lot of women

I don’t get your reasoning here…

What is he going to do? Spread it from 80% to 80.01%? Hell, we’ve all probably spread HPV at some point. If she is as promiscuous as you’ve said she’s probably had it for decades and the womanizing ex is innocent lol.

You’re young. If sex is important to you , and more important to you than it is to her, consider moving on. Being a stand up guy doesn’t mean you have to shut down your natural desires or change the way you wish to show her how desirable she is.

She seems to want a gay friend, to snuggle and watch TV with. Imagine if you have children how much less physical attention you will receive.

She’s been around the block more than you have? So what? She has had bad relationships? So what? None of that is your fault and if she’s not ready to meet you on the same page, move on.

You said there are other red flags as well but this is the one you chose to discuss.

Yeah, sorry dude. Dad is right. She’s old and in her own way. Get back in the game.

:woman_walking: :motorway: :sun: :beach_with_umbrella: :bikini:

I understand your point and we will never know where it might come from. I found out that she tends to share some privacy with her friends like they do because in her words “those are topics that only women can understand”. And shortly after she found out about the disease, she told her friend that men are a disaster, like it was not up to her.

I also read somewhere that some women offer sex to obtain companionship even when they do not want it, but I have never experienced something like this firsthand.

Uhm— sounds like
You have now. :face_with_monocle:

It’s just… not a big deal to have HPV unless you’re one of the very unlucky few that has symptoms. Unless she had symptoms then it further enforces my overall impression she’s just way too uptight a person in general and you’re better off with someone else anyway.

Sounds like a rough situation. I can’t say I’ve experienced the same thing with Taiwanese women specifically or Asian women generally.

I guess the question for you to reflect on is how much time and energy you want to invest. It might be possible that she can be made to feel more comfortable in bed and will open up, but maybe not.

Did you come here for advice? I’m thinking making her a nice dinner, have a glass of wine and watch an episode of a comedy show she likes with some cuddles, then retire to the bedroom with a bottle of lube, and take your time with the foreplay. Maybe you have tried all of these kinds of things. It’s a rough situation. I couldn’t see a long term relationship with nothing, but cuddles and blowjobs would be an acceptable compromise on my end :man_shrugging:

I agree with your observations and if this doesn’t get fixed or improved, I would have to consider moving on.

My point to her previous relationships is that she is not a strict woman that has been most of her life a virgin and or if she didn’t have a sex education or if she was deeply focused only in her career. One of the red flags is that at the beginning she was still chatting online with some of her previous relationships or letting people including the bf that cheated on her to write her happy birthday in her Facebook and from time to time meeting him in events related to her industry as both work in the same type of job. She told me that it was just chatting online just as friends but she wouldn’t dare to meet them IRL while we have a serious relationship but I told her that was not acceptable, so she replied if she didn’t have any rights to have “male” friends. Of course she can but not those that already saw her naked!

I even found out that she was still writing to a Japanese guy who met online and went together to a trip to another country and she was still chatting with him. At first she told me that nothing happen as it was not her type and he was smoking and having some other vices that she didn’t agree…and even sleeping in different rooms. I still told her that I didn’t buy it so she ended up admitting that they tried one night she was too tired and nothing happen and the next night it was him not having a hard on so after that they “just stayed” as friends. And when she travelled to Japan with another friend, she met him one afternoon in a cafeteria and just stayed there. And she even showed me the chat and they were just talking about experiences across different countries and food, sharing photos of places or talking about stocks…but also he was asking her when she was going back. So I just reminded her that for me it was a non-go if she was still doing that.

At that point she was even clueless and asked me about what she had to do. Even asked one of her friends (another girl) which obviously told her if she was fool and she just had to cut any contact with all her exs after breaking up…

There’s different strains of HPV, some are much higher risk than others, so that needs to be tested for and followed also. As mentioned it’s really common.
