Getting the 2nd shot in Taiwan for COVID-19 vaccines

Wish they’d give info on WHERE and HOW to book a 2nd shot.

A number to call or even health centers where it will be available.

Because Mackays regular phone is dreadful.

Tried local hospital today , as usual nobody answered.

Well, I think you can change hospital choices, not necessarily where you got the first one.

The health centers are usually attached to the local governments headquarters. Or pretty close.

Yeah, the newspaper stories often aren’t great at providing useful information like that, are they? Maybe that information isn’t available yet - but in that case, the story should say so.

I just had a look at Danshui Mackay’s website for vaccines (Chinese only; I used Google Translate). I can’t see anything about yesterday’s developments, but the information hasn’t been updated since June 17 either. Unsurprising given that it’s a weekend. I’ll be mildly surprised if useful details become available today - more likely we won’t be able to talk to anyone or make any bookings until Monday or Tuesday.

In Danshui I saw a long line of tents and stools near the Carrefour, I think with 疫苗 / vaccines on posters. It’d be great if I could just go there rather than truck downtown to that MacKay branch again.

Then again, the downtown MacKay is reasonably close to Baba Kevin’s BBQ, and getting that for take-out is always appealing.

Checked WanFang and TzuChi’s websites earlier, nothing about second shot appointments on them either.

A friend of mine got his second shot late this week. He’s in his 20s (or maybe early 30s), working at one of the international schools (so priority group 7, apparently). He’d had the first shot under the self-paid program at Mackay.

Apparently some clinic had some doses expiring/being thrown out, and he got a phone call and email saying the spare doses were now available for lower priority groups. So he signed up, took a taxi to the clinic, had the shot…then was told by the clinic they’d now been advised that spare shots could only go to priority group 4 or above. Then another email confirming the same. So it seems he got pretty lucky.

I find it very, very easy to imagine feeling uncomfortable in line sometime in the next couple of weeks. Several hundred Taiwanese people age 65+, and me! Not young, but not elderly either, and definitely sticking out in the crowd.

I thought the 2nd-shot registration was starting on Wednesday the 23rd?

I’m glad they straightened those dates out; the English version from the CECC was totally botched.

The article @lunlan linked above says, emphasis added, “can now make appointments for their second shot”, and “the second … shots will be administered from June 23”. Which to me means we can sign up now, and get injected starting on Wednesday. However, the article may not be accurate, and perhaps no one told the hospitals.

I called a couple of places—apparently bookings start tomorrow. Got same response from a few hospitals and health centers I tried.

Thanks. I sure wish they would be unambiguous from the get-go.

Did you get any leads on where and how to book tomorrow? A website or a phone number?

I can’t believe they still haven’t organised a seperate vaccine booking hotline yet. It would make it so much easier. I had to go through 3 different numbers, and the 3rd one forwarded me to two seperate places just to find out that bookigns start on Monday.

It’s a complete mess.

Is there a list somewhere of clincs that are currently providing Covid vaccines, so we know who might be worth trying to contact tomorrow when/if the scheduling really starts?

I found PDF files on CECC by city of vaccination centers, but there’s nothing in those files about Covid vaccines, just hepatitis, tetanus, etc.

Audrey Tang’s vaccine booking system is ready to go online - hopefully it’ll be activated on June 23rd.

Two hours is not bad at East Asia hospital it was 2 weeks.

Today, 06/20, at 19:15, I spoke to a CDC representative … He said that their news release really means that the delivery process of the vaccines from CDC to district health departments will begin on 06/23 … and AFTER the districts receive the vaccines, each district health department will then evaluate the need in their areas, and then decide how to allocate their allotments to local clinics for the administration to people eligible for self-paid 2nd doses. Each district may have different procedures and guidelines for administration of the vaccine.

He advised to call 1999 on 06/23 to inquire about actual registration process, to verify your eligibility for self-paid 2nd dose, and to learn which local clinics will receive the vaccine for self-paid 2nd doses. He said that 1999 will automatically connect you to the district health department from where you are calling.

The CDC representative said that his understanding is that local clinics will not begin registration process until AFTER they receive their allocated doses. He kept repeating wait until 06/23 to call for details.

Thanks @nadandeo. Good info.

I figure tomorrow I’ll be checking hospital websites, not bothering with calls, and not expecting much until Wednesday.

Calling local district health departments … boy, a bunch of foreigners with questionable Chinese skills phoning those folks. This is going to go well! Let’s hope that online system is working by then. I can manage a website. Phone calls, not so much.

My Chinese language listening comprehension is terrible … so, I only attempt to speak English on the telephone, but I’m comfortable making calls and trying to see what I can do on my own before asking for help.

Just to see what would happen, I called 1999 earlier this evening … surprisingly, after a long automated message in Chinese language, it gave an option to press for English service … and then the outgoing message clearly said it was after business hours and after the tone, you can leave your phone number for a return call, … but it doesn’t tell you that you can NOT leave a verbal message … after the tone, you must key in your phone number (without talking, if you start talking after the tone, you will get another outgoing message and then get disconnected). After you key in your phone number, the outgoing message will confirm receiving your number and that you are in the queue to receive a return call during normal business hours.

I’ll post here if and when my call gets returned, and if the person who returns my call speaks English or not.
