Golden Retriever in trouble

Hi guys
I’m very very freaked out by this dog that has been tied up outside for the past year. This guy got the dog, then his parents refurnished his home, and Charlie has been tied up outside with a bicycle lock since. We convinced him to buy a doggie bed for him in winter, and the owner did. Then in summer it was so damn hot we convinced the guy to shave him…and he did. The owner is NEVER home, and when he gets home he hardly even looks at him. He is young and leaves in the mornin to play basketball, gets home late at nite. Often Charlie is without water, and I can’t even stand that space he is in, because the wood and that little roof makes it like a freakin greenhouse.

I went there today to ask him if he really wants his dog, and I found the dad. THe dad agreed that Charlie should leave and go to a better home where he can be indoors and get attention. Now to work on the son…THe dad was happy to see me and begged me to take the dog for a walk (sometimes the owners sister lets him run around for like 3 minutes)

I took Charlie into my place just so he can get shade…and he has been panting for more than an hour…he is so dehydrated and has mosquito bites all over his body and an eye infection.

So…I’m going to work on his owner to give him up. In a VERY nice way, explain to him that I know he loves his dog(yeah right) but if he wont consider giving him a new home.

What do you guys think?

He is extremely friendly and calm…

ayoooo…my pics always used to work…

That’s a lovely dog. Usually people go crazy about Golden Retrievers. Don’t really understand how locals can be so indifferent to animals they own.

May I ask how you get the pics to work? You’re supposed to press the Img button, paste the adress and then press Img again…always seemed to work?

The only thing I did differently is uploading the picture to imageshack instead of photobucket. Maybe you inserted the links incorrectly?

Don’t use the URL shown in the browser, instead right-click on the picture(s), copy the link address and insert as shown below, that should work:

Nice doggy btw, hope you find a good place for him.

went there today and couldnt find the guy (he was in the shower) but his sister said that the dog is like his son. Hmmmmm. Got some video footage and pics of his wounds just in case…Hope he will give him up.

oooh I get it…photobucket added another little option above the image code…I didnt notice and copy pasted the wrong one…heehee…oops.

I went there just now and he was panting like mad…I tried to fill his bowl with water but he jumped up to get to the tap and started drinking out of there…then lay down where the water spilled. Poor boy…nobody was home.

I like the last picture. The dogs seem to ask: “Are you alright?”

Battery9 as always doing the right thing. :bravo: Keep us updated!

I would demand the dog be properly cared for or given away. His poor treatment is impacting the quality of life for people in the vicinity and you are justified in making such demand.

Nice just don’t cut it dude - you’ve not won any friends. At some point being nice is being part of the problem.

Food for thought.

I don’t want to go the demanding way because I have three dogs and I live right across from them. So I’m always scared of something being done to my dogs if I’m too threatening. If he refuses to give him up I will print out what is on here about animal neglect, and take it to him…working with him to set up a nicer deal for Charlie. (we asked him to shave Charlie a while back, he did…we told him about the AnimalsTaiwan beds, he bought two) So he has always been sortof open-minded.

If he refuses, then I will have to do something (legal of course)

is seems like the dad and sister has been giving more attention to him now, but he still pants like mad…poor thing.

Erm … its over 35 degrees right now. My dog pants all the damn time. So does pretty much every other dog I see these days. Hell, so do I. It’s why they’re called the “dog days of summer.” If you can make sure he’s got some water he’ll be fine I think. He sure doesn’t look like he’s mistreated from your pics.

So do you leave your dog tied to a bicycle lock 24-7 outside? The guy leaves home at 8, comes home after dark. The people in the home doesn’t check on the water. They laughed when I complained about the eye infection. He smells and is covered in mosquito bites. Maybe if I could find a way to copy paste the suffocating effect that wooden deck and roof makes you would understand.

Checking on water…that is the stupid part. It should not be my responsibility.

So if its as bad as that, call the authorities. PM Stray Dog for the number – I believe he’s had some success dealing with them – and follow up. I agree it’s not ideal and that it shouldn’t be your responsibility, but you seem to be making it such. BTW, if he’s covered in bites he probably has heartworm also.
I really wasn’t trying to belittle your efforts, if that’s what you’re thinking. Sorry if I gave you that impression. I think you’re a real star for doing what you do, as it happens.

I don’t want to call the authorities just yet because it is a tricky situation…they will know that I did it…and propably make a big fuss and come after my dogs.
The guy has listened to suggestions before…maybe I can convince him to make a nice shelter for Charly with a fan going or something. And buy one of those huge bottles that refill the bowl once it’s empty…stuff like that.

There is this guy in our neigborhood that keeps his dog outside too, but has pimped out a nice doggy house with a fan and a huge umbrella etc…

It just makes me sooooo sick that ppl dont want to get rid of their animals, but dont want to give them a little bit of their time and affection either.

Take a pic or two and show the guy. He sounds like he’s been accepting your advice so far. I don’t know how “close” you are to him, but maybe you could even offer to help construct something – maybe even buy him a long chain or something (absolutely cheap as chips) so the dog can move around more freely.

Sounds to me as if the guy actually really likes his dog but just isn’t terribly smart when it comes to looking after it. Your education of him seems to be paying off so far. Good luck. I ran into your sis the other day btw. Hope you’re liking your new place.

He’s not the only one, I am afraid. I know a nice local guy who owns an Alaskan husky. Last time I met him I asked him how his dog is dealing with the heat and everything and if he trimmed the dog’s hair to make the dog feel less hot. He looked at me somewhat disturbed and said something like “but that would make my dog look bad, wouldn’t it?”. Oh my Golf… :loco:

Charlie used to live inside, till his folks remodelled the place now he has to stay outside. I think it’s more a kind of status thing. Cool to have pics of his dog on his cellphone etc…I have seen him come home, and Charlie jumps up half insane he is so happy, and the guy doesnt even look his way…just goes into the house (past him) and doesnt come out again till morning.

Not terribly smart about it yes…he bought an AnimalsTaiwan bed, then it got wet, so he threw it out! Errrr…wash the damn thing. Now we took him another one. We once took Charlie for a walk in the mountains and he said we are insane to spend so much time and energy on walking our dogs. Oh well, at least he isnt malicious…I’m not close to him, but he does listen to advice…
