Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant (GB美式餐廳 )

I like the chicken wings at TGIF. I think they’re about 300NT which is OK with me. I only go during cocktail happy hour when I can get two mojitos for 250NT plus service charge. That’s acceptable with me. GB is just too much - 300 for two beers during happy hour is taking the piss.

I’ve never understood why the Taipei market is so tolerant of high alcohol prices.

Lots of rich Taiwanese and Taiwanese Americans. Like to spend money on themselves not their employees. Also loads of well off Taipei sons and daughters of landlords…Money to spare for brunch and dinner. I was in GB Zhongshan a couple of months ago , I was probably the only foreigner there, the place was packed too !
I had no complaints about the food or drinks , a step up from TGIF, but pricey…YES. I used my shinkuang mitsukoshi vouchers which is about the only western restaurant you can use them in.

I’d rather get coronavirus than eat at GB.

I don’t think I’ve ever eaten there. I remember the beer was quite nice.

Fantastic food, no, but it’s mostly decent, and as far as I know it’s the best restaurant in Taipei for a broad “generic” North American menu. I can get better pizza, I can get better ribs, I can get better burritos or tacos, I can get better salads, etc., but not all at the same place.

Also re-recommending their weekday lunch specials: same price as normal food, but includes a dessert. More limited menu. (And you can order beer slightly cheaper.)

The one in Zhongshan does very decent western food.

Good point, sometimes published stats on wages don’t reflect reality. There are lots of aloof Taiwanese that are ‘off the grid’ and have plenty of money to spend.

Press F to pay respects.

Gordon Beirsch was a victim of Covid and has withdrawn from the market.

What has been left behind is the most relevant letters, G and B, along with their overpriced menu.

Note: “In 2021, GBA moved its headquarters and brewery to ZhuBei.”

That’s an incredible way to spin things.

I tried out the one in Zhubei last year. They have decent tacos, so that’s a plus.

I’m a little confused; I walked by the one in Xinyi the other day, and it seemed normal. Is there English language news somewhere?

Didn’t Gordon Biersch go bust globally last year? Is this a buy out?

Yes. https://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/news/2020/03/06/gordon-biersch-park-place-bankruptcy-craftworks.html

As part of bankruptcy proceedings the local partner likely cut ties with the parent company.

They kept the same menu by changing around some names and spun up a brewery in Zhubei.

So what do you know, its’s same-same but different (minus the license fee). As locals call it GB anyway, not a huge deal.

I had dinner there once and I didn’t really like it.

Wasn’t it just a socially acceptable way to get a bit drunk while having a family dinner? Like wife doesn’t want you going to the pub, so let’s all go to GB and order a beer tasting board while the kids eat burgers and draw on the placemats.

Ah, I did wonder if they looked a little different. That’d explain it.

For me a couple steps up on that, at least in Taiwan. As I’ve probably said a few times up-thread, it’s the closest I’ve seen here to the pubs of Vancouver: huge range on the (yes, overpriced) menu, nothing done that well but all adequately, and most importantly for me a place to eat and then sit with a quiet pint or two in the afternoon. Most other places with decent beer don’t open till dinner.

And not quite as tacky as Chili’s or Friday’s.

Friday’s makes pretty bomb cocktails though. They almost taste too good for the amount of liquor they put in there.

I can see that, but sitting in a Fridays drinking a cocktail in a weekday afternoon feels somehow not quite right (or that I’m twenty years too old for that), whereas drinking a beer in GB feels fine.

I need to once again have a look at the Danshui waterfront. One newish place looks like it serves (assuredly overpriced) cocktails. Cocktails on the waterfront in the afternoon, sure, sign me up!

Two for one cocktails with chicken wings during a weekday is perfectly normal for a guy in his 50s.
