Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) - Kaohsiung's Recalled Mayor

All while his former opponent was trying to help people under the rain?
Optics status: less than ideal

Wasn’t there anyone in his pr team suggesting him to do something different?
“Yo chief, water be falling, show up in public and do something useful!” -> had dinner with his pals instead

It is “standard procedure” of Taiwan’s politics to attack political opponents in the aftermath of disasters.

It’s different when mayor wasn’t there, didn’t do enough, sleeping at home, been lazy or drinking with friends in restaurant. Last one can’t even lie some lame excuse.

edit

It doesn’t matter. He blamed the state of the waterworks on Chen Mama before the storm during his «inspection», and that is the story that is played on the news.

He expected the flood, he wanted the flood to play to his base.

And talking about news, look how much the KMT stands behind Korean Fish. They still consider him an outsider…or worse, they are setting him up as pansy for whatever is up their sleeve. So much for defending the ROC.

I think that’s maybe setting him up for a “ patsy” , but pansy works too . :joy::kissing_heart:

Oof.

Will Taiwan still be safe after Korea fish becomes leader?

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

This guy’s gonna crash and burn. That wasn’t even a typhoon. If the city sinks in the next typhoon, he’s sunk!

Sure hope the captain goes down with the ship. Unlikely though.

For a guy who has largely rose to prominence through social media and the internet, it’s an interesting gaffe to go out drinking the night of a storm like that. Did his handlers in Beijing not realize what was happening?

Beijing isn’t known for looking in-touch with the population. Tone-deaf is certainly within expectation.

Check out the cringey rap video the CCP made for HK.

We´d wish. But look at the spectacle he made of himself on a tree and all the adoration he is receiving from his fans because of it. It is hopeless.

His loud fans don’t always mean popular support. If that were the case he’d be having 60, 70% approval on polling.

As I said, he did the damage control before, by blaming Mama Chen for the bad condition of the water evacuation systems. He´s got a solid alibi blaming the DPP administration and a fervent fan base -and media coverage- who not only swallows but supports any and all BS he spouts.

Yeah, I got that but it remains poor optics.

If he didn’t have aspirations beyond mayor, I wouldn’t care but this sort of thing is the thing that worries me about politicians, especially those who may not have the best decision-making process or the most stringent code of morality. Do they listen to people? Do they have people near them who will say something if needed? Do they isolate themselves so much that they don’t hear outside voices?

What scares me is they’ll do another poll that shows Tsai in the lead and the handicart set will drag their kids to the voter’s booth in order to vote the “right way”.

Does anybody here like Han? Does anybody want to play devil’s advocate about why he’s so popuar? I’ve asked a lot of Taiwanese friends this question and the only answers I’ve heard are something about him being a man of the people and complete outsider (neither of which seem to be the situation) and something about him being able to improve the economy. However, even if both were factual, I don’t get the passion of his supporters. I don’t know if I know of another world leader who I can’t look at and say ‘ok, I get why people like him/her/zer’ but don’t really understand Han.

His base is the 18% ers who lost their privilege, the third colum wumao and business people who benefit from China and property especulation and a bunch of people who have been beaten to submission and think if Taiwan surrenders, everything will be fine. Not a few cats, I´m afraid to say. What unites his followers is the fear and hate of DPP and Taiwan identity, and loyalty to the zombie ROC plus a longing for teh good ol tiem sof the 80s.

Labor is so dull; just because they get terrible benefits doesn’t mean they need to strip it of civil servants. A few decades ago nobody wanted to be a civil servant, now they’re the bogeyman.
