How bad can it be if the number of countries that ROC/Taiwan has official diplomatic relations with is exactly ZERO?

Anyone went here, seems bit low income. Taiwan will no longer support. (But only 10,000 people live there)

They need, help from Wiki:

Life expectancy in Nauru in 2009 was 60.6 years for males and 68.0 years for females.[154]

By measure of [mean body mass index (BMI)], Nauruans are the most overweight people in the world;

It’s sad. Yet another Austronesian country to sever ties with Taiwan. Nauru has one of the coolest flags in my opinion.

Oh no. Whatever will we do without… checks notes… Nauru? But seriously, they’re cowards and China is petty as usual.

They broke ties with R.O.C. in 2002, recognizing China.
Then re-recognized R.O.C. in 2005.
Will see how much money it takes for re-rocognition again.

Except as a tally of countries that still support us, why is it worth it? What do we get out of being allies with Nauru? Free passage through their waterways, I dunno? Seems like a “good riddance” situation.

My point, too…

Taiwan loses first ally after election as Nauru goes over to China

Part of the usual playbook: carrots for the KMT, sticks for the DPP.

I wonder if MOFA saw this one coming . . .

Guy

I am, they have been doing a few changes for money, might be sad but they finished their shit (phosphate) and now r begging for money everywhere.

Taiwan should pay some of us to build new islands on atolls somewhere and sponsor our new nation building for mutual recognition.

Nauru is pretty desperate for money anyway possible since wasting everything they got from phosphorus mining. They tried being an off shore banking nation but got sanctioned pretty quick for money laundering. Now ironically they make money for allowing Australia to use them as an offshore detention center.

I am more a fan of Kiribati’s flag, although the bird should be more to the right of the sun. :slightly_smiling_face:

Usual terms are either
Taipei Economic and Trade Office
Taipei Economic and Cultural Office

I love Kiribati’s flag as well. The bird is a bit too complicated to draw though.

It was known a long time ago this would happen.

The Nauru government saying it’s the best interest of the people is laughable. Their MPs get like 5k a month from Taiwan so I guess China is paying them more. It’s good for their politicians. Taiwan provides around 10mUSD last data I found to Nauru in projects and I think some other aid as well.

I don’t really see them as a good ally besides advocating for taiwan on the international stage. But they have little actual pull.

To me, taiwan should focus on building more relations with other countries even if it’s not officially. And making sure taiwan is useful economically. Let’s be real, taiwan is only going to get strong support if it’s a strong economic powerhouse like today that punches above its weight.

I think they’re doing exactly that.

Nauru is a basket case financially, they squandered all their funds a couple of decades back, and have flipped diplomatic recognition a few times. The 2005 switch to the PRC cost the latter over USD$100m.

Didn’t Tuvalu also spunk all the money it made from selling the .tv domain name? Or am I misremembering that?

Tuvalu seems to be doing quite well from the .tv domain and gets approx $10m (USD?) per year from Go Daddy who run the registration.

As an aside, and to keep on topic, it seems that there is an ROC Embassy there too,
