How much are you paying for you World Gym membership

The priced I got was $1,488(islandwide membership) per month + 3,888 signup fee.
Is this a good price?

It’s a good price if you use it. Did you really need island wide? How much do you really travel to the other cities? Even with a single location membership, you can get guest passes for any other World location worldwide, including Taiwan, for either 7 or 14 visits (I forget which) at each one.

I bought a single location membership in Xindian. I would never likely use the Neihu facility anyway, and I travel to KHH maybe once a year. My partner and I got a household membership where the first person pays 1200/month and the second person in the same household pays 1000/month. This is single-location, 2-year agreement.

Either way, it is MUCH cheaper than the US$70/month I used to pay for Crunch in San Francisco.

They wanted me to pay $1488 for a single location and they wouldn’t go any lower.
I’m out of town about 2+ times a month so a island wide.
btw, this is a new location opening in Hsinchu around end of Jan 2009 so that means I’m not able to workout yet.

Are you sure? The manager told me that it was 14 visits all together and not at each one.

I would have to double check, but I am fairly sure. It’s competitive with Gold’s Gym program where you could visit any location worldwide up to 7 times each. (I used to be a personal trainer at Gold’s.) I believe when we joined World, I remember their program being competitive with Golds. Would have to check, though.

My advice, for what it’s worth: wait until they’ve opened up and got the place running before you buy a membership.

Call me cynical, but I do not trust businessman here enough to give them my money for something that I can’t see, something as distant as Jan 2009.

Prices are always negotiable at this place. My deal: $11 000NT for 13 months. I talked to the manager to get this price after getting unprofessional service from one of the reps. My membership is good at both Taichung branches. Stay away from the “personal trainers” at $1700NT per hour.

Yup must have been the hefty personal trainer charges that got my GF her 50,000 nt package?? Whata joke. But hey she thinks its a good deal.

I already joined but can I cancel since they’re not open yet?

You can try to cancel. Did you pay for the whole year in advance? I assume your year begins in January? What the hell is a sign up fee?

I just paid the sign up fee + the first month which is 5376.

Is nobody else paying the signup fee?

I didn’t pay a sign up fee nor would I ever. The idea of attracting new business by asking them to pay a high sign up fee is ridiculous and backwards. There is absolutely no need for this fee, especially given their already inflated prices. How did you find the meeting, did you find the rep to be professional, competent, pushy? California is the same.

I didn’t find the rep to be very professional… he couldn’t answer some Q’s I had and kept saying that if I didn’t decide now that I would never get that low pricing again.

Looks like I need to go in this week and cancel my membership.

I don’t mind the sign up fee. It’s from that fee that they pay the sales person, generally. There are administrative costs involved in setting up a membership, too. How much is fair, in my opinion, depends on how much the monthly rate is. I think the monthly rate at World is pretty cheap.

I thought I was getting a good deal since they’re not gonna be open but I see that somebody else got a better deal at a branch that is already open. . . makes me want to get back to the sales guy and talk about getting me a better deal since they aren’t gonna be open for another 3 months(they can’t promise the opening date).

Taipei and Hsinchu are different markets. They may very well have different target prices. That’s not to say that it isn’t negotiable. Buying gym memberships is a lot like buying a car. You have to bargain hard and be willing to walk away if you don’t get the price you want.

Once you’ve signed the contract, though, there’s probably not much you can do about the price. You could go pitch a fit about hearing friends getting better prices and how you feel ripped off and insist on some value-added bonus like free time.

Seriously, for island-wide (assuming you will really frequently use facilities around the island), your deal is fair. Is it worth the headache to try to trim a couple dollars? The prices people have mentioned here are single club or single city memberships.

I don’t mind the monthly but I hear alot of people not paying the initration fee which is $3888

I check on the this forum and saw that Taiwan law allows us 15 days to cancel a membership from the signing date so I still have a week.

I paid the fee… I ain’t trippin about it…

I agree. I just looked at the total payment for a two-year membership, including the sign-up fee (which adds just a bit over NT$150 per month), and decided that it was reasonable enough for what I’d be getting. I’ve no complaints about it at all.

well, you don’t need to wait 3+ months to use the gym and I’m not getting a better deal to pay in advance.
