It would not surprise me, sometimes Taiwanese tell me racial comments, thinking that I agree. (The linked/source story has more details with passenger’s name)

Let’s not beat around the bush… the only people who rank lower in East Asians’ eyes than Southeast Asians are Blacks. Most locals who say they want to date foreigners usually mean they’re only open to dating whites…

What about South Asians?

:man_shrugging:

I don’t know if they factor into their lives that much so I won’t speculate. But I have heard many talk disparagingly about Blacks over the years (both in Korea and Taiwan) with a few of my seemingly open minded and culturally aware exes saying they wouldn’t date a Black person. But that’s absolutely tame compared to a couple things I’ve seen/heard over the years.

Not an ex, two Taiwanese female friends asked each other would go out with a black man, said probally not but though about they may have big penis (not sure sterotype or fact) and from there…

To be fair, some might be personally open to it but worried about their parents’ reaction which factors heavily into all decision making here, whether it’s relationships, jobs, where to live, etc.

I don’t think American blacks do rank lower in their minds. Lots of cram school managers are American black and inter racial mariages with American blacks here. It’s the same with whites they look at a white Russian completely differently to white British.

I don’t know… it seems the darker your skin in East Asia the lower you are on the totem pole. Plus they mostly only get negative depictions from western media and think they’re all criminals. They may run buxiban chains but that’s due more to their English proficiency than social standing. ‘Good enough to learn English from, but don’t you dare marry one’ kinda thing. Could be worse in Korea. I had a couple Black friends there and heard stories I couldn’t believe. Like one guy taught at a cram school and the kids would make monkey sounds every time he entered the classroom to teach.

Makes sense to me that they land in Anchorage. -9 degrees C there, will cool that heated argument in no time!

This is very true

I wouldn’t agree with that on a general level. It depends how much money folks have also and what nationality.

I agree. I know of two cases where parents destroyed the relationships. Always about $$$$$$!

  1. White American woman with Taiwanese man. Parents told their son that if he married her that he would be disinherited. He broke up with her after 5 years together and she returned to Canada a bitter woman.

  2. Filipino-Han Chinese male and Taiwanese woman. Her parents threatened to disinherit her if she married the Filipino man, because he looked more Filipino and he had dark skin. She dumped him after 6 years together. She married a man of her parents choosing and she’s super unhappy. I don’t know what happened to him.

Love or money? Always money in Taiwan!

On my side, I thought for sure it would be about Air Canada!

Guy

My father-in-law prevented my sister-in-law from marrying the man she loved when she was young. So instead she ended up with an abusive asshole who she eventually divorced. Father doesn’t always know best.

This “all criminals” is real fear of some (or many) here in Taiwan, that they walk away to avoid them.

at a milder level, but still indicating an attitude: how often does the seat next to you on the MRT stay empty? or the neighboring passenger moves to an alternative empty seat once one becomes available nearby?

Not very often. I feel like most people don’t care and when I get on the MRT it’s usually so crowded that no one wants to give up a perfectly good seat.

Yeah but when it’s less busy, I feel there are choices..

Often, but so what that leaves more room for me.

Don’t swim under waterfalls, Taiwan, Arizona, same thing.
