Is America in decline?

About half that- but still a lot.

Being a millionaire in the US really doesn’t mean much. A million dollars doesn’t go very far in today’s economy.

That’s wildly untrue. Ever read The Millionaire Next Door. They don’t all own yachts.

Considering that many houses in the bay area is worth a million dollars… that means everyone who has a house there is a millionaire.

What part is “wildly untrue”? You think having a million dollars is a lot of money to survive on in the US?

Yes.

Define your argument. No job and five kids and a million bucks? A million dollars in the bank and a job that pays…how much?

What standard of living are you looking at? Basic necessities or soccer mom SUV in a cul-de-sac?

As I stated in my original post

Just having a million dollars won’t get you very far for very long in the US. I didn’t state anything about having a million dollars while continuing to earn whatever it took to save the first million.

Right, you made a blanket statement. A million dollars in upstate NY will last a long ass time. Same with many many others locales.

Yeah most of them have careers or are retired. That is what we do at this age. Same as in Taiwan, all my contacts are retired or have careers. And yes some get sick, some get better and some die, but that’s life.

But I guess you mean what happens to the lazy ones. My buddy still lives in his mom’s basement because he thinks physical board games are the next trend. But since Covid his LinkedIn states he is a Covid Activist Entrepreneur. Always looking for that next hustle.

I remember in the 1980s they were saying Japan will overtake the USA by…date. It never happened , that does not mean that China will not just that I have heard similar before. Then the argument that “Well it is only its military that is years ahead, but in other areas…” Well the military is kind of the most important thing to keep a country in a number 1 spot. If there was a weak US navy, does anyone think China would not have expanded further. There would be no island disputes, as they would all be under CCP control.

This is in Philadelphia, as you can see by the subway station sign right at the beginning.
“It’s not Cuba. It’s the U.S.”

If America is going to decline, it will not be because of some foreigner, or foreign power. It will happen from within. Just like that January 6th thing.

But foreigners will always get the blame for America’s internal problems. It’s the same playbook in all countries. Accuse other countries of what you are doing.

Only if you’re a far right conservative. Everyone else blames it on the politicians and capitalism.

Yea, except far right conservative seems to have enough of a majority (or gerrymandered majority) to ensure that immigration laws remain tough to keep the “scary foreigners” out.

Oh stop. Neither party is doing jack squat to keep people from illegally crossing the southern border. As for the legal workers visa, I agree, it could be broadened to keep folks here after getting their higher ed degree, but to throw the fault only at the feet of conservatives in high office is a gross simplification.

I’m speaking of legal immigration. It is largely extremely difficult to do this unless you are the elites of your country.

Of course both parties wants the southern border to remain open for illegal immigration so they can continue exploiting them.

The problem is every solution to strengthen border security is almost always making legal immigration more difficult. Or make the enforcement action for illegal immigration less and less humane.

Right, exploiting them. With those jobs and free schooling and health care. sher.

btw, the H1b visas for 2022 quota has been met.

Yes. The USA is headed off a cliff.

Really so terrible.

I’m from the USA. I am visibly white. Visibly ugly. Visibly arrogant. Visibly awkward.

You think I’m fucked up? Look at who all is “running” the USA.
