Yes it is. It is becoming more expensive.
Hsinchu is certainly a bit boring but not a shithole I reckon. Although it should be Las fucking vegas with the amount of money flying around.

Have you been to Las Vegas? It’s mostly casinos and entertainment and hookers.

When I was a kid, it had cheap buffets but not anymore.

Tainan will always be Tainan, with newer areas more like Hsinchu away from central area in Tainan county.

No way Tainan could ever be as soulless as Hsinchu.

It is also entertainment, drugs and hookers in much of Taiwan too. the fuck people on about? the difference is the type of entertainment is VASTLY different than las vegas :joy:

Otherwise similar levels of idiocy, craziness, waste and so on. just in different ways

Tainan is already basically prohibitively expensive. it’s just that the new jusmo.hasnt been spent yet and the ones without good jobs still have real estate. that is changing very fast.

jusmo what?

Well the thing is, Las Vegas is glitzy. But not any more than Taipei. I wonder why Asian countries use up so much more lighting.

The metro in most US cities is pretty dark.

Electricity is cheap. And everybody else does it, so you have to to get noticed.

Blissful gift, srsly here utilities r so damn cheap: petrol, gas, water, electricity… And so much is wasted. Increasing a bit to induce savings via a tariff might help, and use that revenue to invest in energy safety and security (by which closing all nuclear power plants to rely on big fans is not a solution today, and won’t be for a while)

All cities outside of Taipei are kind of similar. This is clearly an opinion of someone who rarely leaves Taipei.

Hualien is very nice. Apparently Kaoshiung is good now

Kaohsiung has been decent since the 2000s, and it has only gotten better.

I went there a couple of times on business trips

Before that I was drunk and chasing girls about the whole time.

Should go as a tourist

Yep, basically.

But I agree with @OrangeOrganics that Las Vegas seems more glitzy, at least on the main streets. otherwise, same shit different smell. Prostitutes, drugs, grime, 711s, traffic and everything else most cities have in common.

That theater photo looks more like parts of the old Taipei County (now Xinbei) than Hsinchu.

Hsinchu City has its own lovely retro theater (it’s located on Zhongshan Road) which looks like this:

And about five minutes away, you can enjoy coffee at this exceptionally beautiful Starbucks store on Hsinchu City’s Wenhua Street:

I am thinking more of the images produced and screened by the great filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang, including his story in Goodbye Dragon Inn about the last night of an old theater in Taipei County. :star_struck:
