Yay, I saw this. Will be great for me since the Italian airports can be really slow getting through customs as a Non EU citizen.

Travelling in Italy with my Taiwanese friend on a domestic route (Verona to Sardinia). At the bag drop, they look at her passport and ask for a resident permit? After a few seconds of thinking, remind them she has Taiwan passport and residence permit not required. (Taiwanese password has Republic of China on the cover), so later I comment a PRC passport is more troublesome as more checks are needed. They also checked at the gate ID for all, this time in Italian and reminded them it’s Taiwan not PRC passport.
Old version of Taiwan passport with still the big ROC writing doesn’t help indeed. New one with the very discreet one is much better.
Usually asking for a supervisor or just telling them to scan the passport will make them think right.
It never really happened to me in Italy with my wife, happened every single time in France instead
We did not need talk with manager, just telling them it was Taiwanese passport was enough. Few Asians here in Sardinia so maybe just never saw a Taiwanese passport.
Thankfully when she renews her passport it will be the improved version which is far clearer ![]()
Hers a few years old, so renew seems after 2030. News one on longer have Republic Of CHINA? Hers has big words above photo and as nationality.
When check name ID , they see and I see China .
As a result I learned having a Chinese PRC passport brings extra checks. (in smaller EU airport may not scan/not be able scan passports so just do visual checks so no knowledge of TWN code)
The new ones have TAIWAN very cisible and the ROC stuff is very small. the DPP won’t get rid of ROC altogether because that will anger the Chinese KMT. So they played it smart. Harder to see and Taiwan being prominent ![]()
If she does t want to wait til expiry she can probably still get a new one. Or reporting the old one as lost. Can get Taiwan passports next day usually for a fee
can even pay people to do it for you, if comfortable doing so.
She maybe keep it for now as it is good till after 2031.Hers look like this: Nationality: Republic of China, so newer ones maybe better if says Taiwan

Legally can’t. It’s a nice stretch already to do this on the cover page. The official name of the state is ROC, then the nationality code in the machine readable stip is TWN. That’s it to be ICAO compliant.
Out of curiosity, why would a PRC National be required to produce a residency certificate to take a domestic flight in Italy?
I do not know. Was also surprised by this question twice.
well, the reasoning is “chinese” person without a visa, must be a resident then to stay here without one. then the TW explanation and all sorted.
Also they are a greater global threat than Taiwan, so everyone wants to check China more [now].
I get checked for my visa (arc) here on domestic taiwanese flights as well. If I was a citizen I would be checked for my Taiwan ID card instead.
I assume this is not the customs officer?
The person that separates the lines in Italy always gets confused and tries to tell me to go to the other line when Taiwan passports get to use the fast lane.
It’s really frustrating because…come on, there’s 9 countries and passports they have to learn to put through the fast track.
I thought it was because my old passports said ROC on it but even with Taiwan on it they don’t know it for whatever reason. I’ve had to argue at times and even once people behind me was backing because there’s a huge sign she’s standing next to that says it.
I’m guessing they don’t put the smart ones there.

Not customs, airport check in staff (Domestic flight). Need ID in Italy, so passport if no ID card. Trouble is passport photo page with name has R.O.C. and no Taiwan. If I looked at ID page in passport I might not know it,s Taiwan. On the train in Sardinia, ID checks for all (locals and us), Police know it’s Taiwan.
Sardinia is nice (Calgargi)
Was also in Bari (south), nice food
Cagliari. Enjoy Sardinian food and wine.

Yes, fast. At Malpensa often the fastest lane on flights from Asia (faster than EU lanes) though you still need a stamp untill EES and comes. Malpensa also still a long walk from the aircraft parking bays.
