Well, fuel is flammable. There are also all kinds of oxidizers on board.

Where do you think the oxygen from the mask comes from?

We should all be grateful they evacuated every single passenger and crew member, which is no mean feat in itself from a burning aircraft.

Some footage now being released of the smoke in the cabin after landing, everyone looks amazingly calm considering the circumstances.

I’m seeing reports that the JAL aircraft hit a Japan Coast Guard plane—with the latter somehow connected to the relief efforts in Hokuriku following the earthquake and tsunami. Clearly someone at HND f&cked up badly . . .

And regarding the Coast Guard crew in the much smaller plane (a Dash 8?), we have learned this sad news:

Two [afterspivak’s note: now confirmed to be five] of the six crew members of the Japan Coast Guard aircraft that crashed into Japan Airlines Flight JL516 [afterspivak’s note: or, based on the photo above, were crashed into by the JAL aircraft] have been confirmed dead according to officials and the captain is in critical condition

Japan wants to jump to 2025,
2024 has many flaws, at least in Japan

While acknowledging the limited information currently available, a professor at Cranfield University in the UK speaks on the BBC about what he saw happen at Haneda today. His praise for the actions of the JAL crew, and indeed of the larger company culture at JAL, are remarkable.

Taiwanese news says that it seems the JAL plane has a failed landing gear so it was doing a belly landing. If that’s the case then shouldn’t the runway be cleared?

From Reuters:

[Japan’s] Transport minister Saito said the cause of the accident was unclear and the Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB), police and other departments would continue to investigate.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said authorities were working to ensure the accident at Haneda did not affect deliveries of earthquake relief supplies.

“This is a great regret as the crew members performed their duties with a strong sense of mission and responsibility for the victims of the disaster area,” he said, referring to those killed on the coast guard plane.

The very near misses in the US because of air traffic control being terrible at communicating (edit: upon searching, also serious understaffing and over working leading to fatigue. Typical modern workforce problems and all that) are apparently actually very common. It’s become more a matter of luck than anything else that this situation at HND doesn’t happen more often.

it is kinda amazing that an event like this can occur and nobody (in the bigger plane) dies. one of my favorite things about reading aircraft incident reports is seeing how much pilots and crews can handle having thrown at them. Sometimes really do be like, no controls? no problem.

Video and photos show the planed landed with all gear down so not failed landing gear

I guess Taiwanese news aren’t known for journalistic integrity.

My pilot friend remarked this is, or rather, was, the first A350 to have an accident/become a total loss in the world.

The plane itself had been handed over to JAL November 2021.

He emphasized training saved so many lives during the emergency.
