Just passed the scooter test, can anyone recommend which brand of scooter I should buy?

I’m looking to purchase a scooter to get to work and back. I also need it to have storage for rain gear, karate and gym gear.

I’m thinking about getting a Sym Duke, but just wondered if anyone had any other recommendations.

My work is about 15km from my apartment and up a hill. So it needs to be able to handle moderately steep slopes.

Any of the top 3 brands will be fine—> Yamaha, Kymco or SYM

A bicycle.

If that’s not possible. At least something electric that doesn’t make the noises of hell.

I had a bicycle, but I’m not riding it 30km every day just to get to work and back.

Everyone has their opinion. I have had loads of sym and kymcos. In my opinion. The kymcos always lasted longer. My last sym, a Z1, I literally just threw to the grandma recycling lady because it was such trash. I only drove it maybe 60k, 5 belts, 2 dash computers, 2 motors and countless electrical issues. I maintain everything to the T! Religiously! To prove I don’t drive like a mad man, only changed brakes 1 time (cause i dont drive fast). Had problems with literally all our SYMs. Kymco, has always been solid. But to be clear, the newest kymco I have is 12 years old. But it still works like new…so, hahaha. F*ck sym.

Only driven a few Yamaha, can’t comment

15km per trip on a pedal assist bike would be nothing. I routinely do 30-40km routes around New/Taipei City on a single speed and it’s fine. Using my pedal assist bike is for when I’m lazy or lugging products around.

To be honest, based on your Reddit post, please try and use an ebike and see how it is. You already apparently have no confidence driving a scooter and maybe should stick to your bike.

Your school is 3km from an MRT station. Depending on where you are coming from there are plenty of public transit methods to get there from the red line. You would have to live in a very odd place to absolutely need a scooter.

It takes an hour by public transport, and most evenings I’ve got gym or karate after work.

My reddit thread was commenting on how useless the driver training is here, which goes a long way to explaining how generally awful the driving is.

I’ll be fine riding a scooter, I’ve got years of UK driving experience to help me avoid danger for the most part.

How about a Super73?

Looks cool, but there’s no storage on it.

How much space does the storage need to have? I think they have accessories.

I hear the Kymco Many EV is a good all rounder to get. Lots of storage space and lots of space on the seat for carrying chicks.

Also it’s electric so no need to worry about servicing, emissions testing etc…

A hoverboard is better.

They were invented in 2015.

The legend marty mcfly used it himself

Just grab the back of a truck then slide your way to your destination

Kymco GP or Sym Dollar

I had to get a new scooter last year, I did a good bit of research and SYM was recommended a lot on the local forums.
I ended up with a SYM Jet SR.
It has ABS, which was a must for me. I also wanted an air cooled engine and an ignition with a key for reliability and ease/cost of maintenance.
I’ve only done about 2000km on it, but I’m Happy with it so far.

Had 2x Sym’s kept one to around 12 years and then ‘gave’ it to my father in law (keep wife happy) after his 25 yr old scooter died in a flood. Replaced it with another Sym and kept that to around 8 years old and then sent it down south to replace the 1st one because the deal I was offered for a Gogoro was too good to miss at the time.

So kymco or kymco? I choose kymco each time.

As a Gogoro rider for 5yrs and had gas scooter for 9. I’m mixed. I hate changing scooter batteries so often and if you ride 30km/day (I do 25km daily) then you might want to stick to gas. I had a Kymco that was solid and used. It was the best return for cost of anything I’ve bought other than Nvidia stock.

Would you consider second hand? Good value and still good quality. But in general, I feel it is easy to get a good scooter, not like cars that have issues often.

Which specific kymco do you recommend. I’m going second hand.

I’ve had a Yamaha breeze 150cc since 2007. It’s always been parked outdoors on the street in all the elements. It’s been through countless typhoons, even being flooded down the street 50 meters in a flash flood. Still going strong though it’s got some rattling now. My next scooter, whenever this one eventually dies, if ever, will undoubtedly be another Yamaha.

I’ve had numerous scooters over my decades here. You can’t go wrong with SYM or KYMCO. I don’t have as much experience with Yamaha but they fit into the same category as SYM/KYMCO.

Think about how much power you want. I bumped up from 150cc, to 160cc, and finally to my current 180cc Kymco Roma GT and I’m very happy with it. The extra cc boost is great. I guess it all depends on what you’re looking for in a ride. And if you don’t need anything fancy, a 125/150cc will do. If you plan on using a full-face helmet, make sure you can fit it in the seat hatch beforehand. Occasionally some models skimp on space there and other helmets fit but full-face ones won’t.
