Let Taiwan Fall, I’m Australian, and I’m Not Dying for a Country That Won’t Fight for Itself

I’m sick of hearing that the West must defend Taiwan.
Why? What exactly has Taiwan done to earn that?

It’s a country that speaks Chinese, refuses to properly arm itself, slashes defense spending during a crisis, and still expects Western nations to die on its behalf.

1. Taiwan Hates Non-Chinese Looking People Anyway

Let’s not forget, Taiwan discriminates against foreigners. Try getting a loan, bank account, rent a house etc… They ask if you are a citizen. If not… you are often denied.
Want to become a citizen? You have to renounce your original nationality.
I was lucky, I’m Australian, so I could resume mine after naturalizing.
But tons of people from the U.S., Canada, most of Europe, Southeast Asia? They’re screwed.
They ask foreigners to give everything up… so they can get less discrimination when living in Taiwan while demanding Western countries defend them with zero obligation.

Imagine asking someone to give up their citizenship to join your club, then hiding behind them when trouble starts.

2. One Year Conscription… to Sweep Floors

Taiwan’s conscription is now one year, and it’s still a complete joke.
Ask anyone who’s done it: it’s folding laundry, sweeping, and waiting out the clock.
They’re not training warriors or building useful skills like engineering etc… They’re running daycare.
And that’s supposed to stop the PLA?

3. Cutting Defense While China Gears Up

While China runs full-scale invasion drills across the strait, Taiwan’s lawmakers are cutting and freezing billions in defense funds.
Premier even said spending more than 3% of GDP is “impossible.” Why? Because they’re too busy handing out cash bribes (stimulus) to maintain votes.
It’s like watching a man light a cigarette while his house is on fire.

4. No Women in the Fight “Not Equipped”

And here’s the kicker: Taiwan refuses to introduce mandatory military service for women.
Why? Because they claim their military is “not equipped to handle women conscripts.”
So let me get this straight:

  • Women demand equal rights
  • Taiwan faces a imminent invasion that justifies the whole conscription system…
  • But women are too delicate to serve?

So instead, what? Western men should die for them while half their own population sits it out?
Hard pass.

5. TSMC Is Not a Good Enough Reason

“Oh but the chips!”
Stop. The designs are Western. The fabs are fragile. The engineers can be evacuated, and the facilities destroyed to deny China any gain.

Meanwhile, Japan, South Korea, and Arizona are already building the next generation fabs.

We don’t need Taiwan for chips.

6. They Speak Chinese. They Act Chinese.

Let’s be honest… Taiwan speaks Mandarin, uses Chinese characters, and shares cultural norms that are far closer to Beijing than Washington.
Sure, they vote. But a ballot box doesn’t make you Western.
They’re not “the last hope of democracy.” They’re just another Chinese-speaking society with slightly better branding.

If Taiwan won’t fight for Taiwan, why the hell should we?

Who/what is the mythical West that you hear speaking? Is it a constant voice or intermittent?

“we” being who exactly?

You know exactly who I’m talking about.
The same “West” that shipped weapons and equipment to Ukraine.
The same Five Eyes club and their tagalongs who keep signing joint communiqués about “peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait” like it’s their backyard.
Australia, the U.S., the UK, Japan, the EU, you know, that mythical group of nations that always ends up paying the price when another country drops the ball.

We, the citizens of those countries who’ll be paying in blood and taxes should this powder keg goes off.

You must have spent a fair amount of time on this.

And we wonder why it is so hard to get citizenship here lol.

That sounds a little like paranoia, are sure you’re OK?

Apart from the EU which obviously is not a nation, those are real nations, not mythical.

Need to clarify a bit here. Who exactly is “we”? Citizens of the “mythical nations”, or countries now?

If you want to die on some filthy, trash-strewn beach in Taoyuan, choking on diesel fumes… while defending Taiwan be my guest. Don’t expect others to join.

It is way too early anywhere in the world to be this drunk.

My car runs on gasoline, would it be OK to choke on gasoline fumes or is it absolutely necessary for it to be a diesel vehicle? There are beaches closer to my home, some heavily trash strewn, some not too bad, could I choose one of those instead? Or is the diesel vehicle specified due to the longer distance to Taoyuan beaches? If that’s it I actually don’t mind the extra expense of gasoline, it’s quite affordable in Taiwan anyway, and it would save me the hassle of changing vehicle particularly as it seems it wouldn’t be used for a very long time. Let me know.

Yes… Taiwan is more focused on subsidizing cheap fuel than properly funding its military, so enjoy that while it lasts. Priorities, right?

No, you don’t get to choose where you fight or die.

That’s the thing about war mate, it’s not a menu.

You don’t get to pick the beach with the nicest view or the best lighting for your last selfie.

No interest in defending Taiwan…your transformation into a Taiwanese national is finally complete.

I certainly will!

You perhaps don’t get how Taiwan has fought for itself. Green Island prisons are a great example. Not the knly one, to be sure.

There is a lot of propaganda.

A lot of wealth injections. From different sources.

Assume, especially the ignorant, have gone through actual martial law/dictatorships (plural), and a massive brianwash campaign that is no joke. Yet, Taiwan still comes out somewhat more free than even the USA… which has a pretty good groundwork, aka the constitution. And a far longer timeline.

That’s delusional. Full stop, delusional. Or ignorant. The later is normal, the former is unacceptable.

It is a far different thing to say taiwan still has a lot of kinks to work out. To which, anyone can agree. This is objectively true. We ALL agree! On thsi point, at least. Same with any country, I am going to presume.

That said, I challenge you. Anyone. Which country has made a bigger ethical change faster than Taiwan? I can’t think of one, but I leave the question open as we are all ignorant. Please, show case a nation that from full on dictatorship only a few decades ago, to a democracy that values freedom like taiwan has. Show me one that is faster.

It’s time that this man could have considered using to earn a living and support his family. I admit I find myself feeling sorry for them.

Guy

Why are you still in Taiwan? Why haven’t you left yet? When are you going to leave?

Isn’t Australia a province of China at this point?
