Lifting Self-Imposed Restrictions on the U.S.-Taiwan Relationship - US State Department

Not so fast bucko. First this, a few days later port call by a warship, then rename AIT to embassy, and finally the recognition on Jan 20th.

Pompeo taking advantage of putting Biden in a rough place- you notice he was too cowardly to do anything about it until he was sure he didnā€™t have to deal with the consequences.
I hope (but am doubtful) China will have the brains not to do anything about this till the incoming administration. I imagine those urging a softer response saying wait, while the hardliners say there has to be a response now or the issue will be treated as settled.

Quite the opposite.
This can be seen as throwing a bone to Biden too. Now Biden has leverage he can work with to make China happy his first week in office.

Biden, ā€œHere you go China, letā€™s fix what crazy uncle Trump did. Just put things back the way they were before, and voila!ā€

The vast majority of Americans would never know the difference. So no worry about upsetting anyone on the home turf either.

Iā€™m glad Pompeo did this for Taiwan U.S. relationsā€¦but it may just last a couple weeks, then poof!

Also a bone if Biden wants to be tough on China, since all he would have to do is nothing to keep the new rule in place

Some analysis (echoes what has already been discussed above)

Hunter Biden Will sign a joint communique with PRC.

Always Angry, like Greta.

Thereā€™s hope for Hunter. If we tell him that Taiwan is the ROC (pronounced rock), I suspect heā€™d change his allegiance.

This is a true example of American leadership. Although Taiwan will likely be sold out by the Hunter Biden Socialist regime, Taiwan should remember there is still hope that the day may come when true allies overcome adversity. For now, dark days ahead.

ā€œTaiwan is in the constitution as part of China, and itā€™s something that they will defend,ā€ Einar Tangen, a political analyst in Beijing, told Al Jazeera.

Freedom of speech is also in their constitution

If the AIT is renamed a recognition wouldnā€™t be necessary. Recognition doesnā€™t have to be an explicit announcement.

Yea, but this one theyā€™re serious about.

Weā€™re boned. Glad trump will be leaving. But biden makes me want to rack up debt and party like its 1999. Actually, so did trump. Bush. Clinton. Bush again, nevermind.

So youā€™ve been partying since 1988?
What happened, take a nap during Obama?

Chen tweeted she was extremely pleased and honoured to visit the embassy, saying it was ā€œthe very first time in my diplomatic careerā€.

Itā€™s funny - Taiwanā€™s diplomatic corps will actually get to meet official US diplomats for the first time, and not simply in the US

Yes, the high-profile meetings get all the attention but itā€™s really important that US and Taiwanese representatives have the ability to meet and build relationships around the world. This is the way to create broad-based support for Taiwan within the halls of power in the US.
