It’s just big talk again. If Trump really wants to make a systematic change let him and Pompeo visit Taiwan together stand on the steps of the presidential palace and declare full opening up of diplomatic relations with the country of Taiwan - and tearing up the 1-China policy. Unless I see this image nothing really has changed has it ? US will pretend it’s doing something and China will pretend to be outraged.
US still doesn’t regard Taiwan as a country. nothing has changed.
A mentally ill Trump going scorched earth would not be good for anyone because he won’t have to deal with the consequences.
The US should absolutely reconsider its One China policy but a deranged lame duck president reversing it in his final days of office is not how this should be done.
Nope, but i do understand why so many people dont give a shit anymore. Time for me to take up the hobby it seems. Sorry for not mentioning Obama, i am white you see…gotta be careful and not piss off the people from my side haha.
It’s not big talk, but rather concrete actions that dismantle “political correctness” that the global socialists (proponent of internationalism, opponent of nationalism) force upon Taiwan and on US. The global socialists hate the concept of National Sovereignty (nationalism) which is the foundation of the Consent of the Governed.
Now you see Taiwan ambassador openly meets US ambassador at a US embassy, thereby shattering Political Correctness. (Kevin Rudd is so upset)
The point is that Trump and Pompeo prove that US can and have exercised this option. And in fact, the the self-imposed restriction is null and void. US UN Ambassador to Taiwan is not nearly as potent as US Secretary of State to Taiwan.
The hypocrisy of previous foreign affairs establishment is exposed wide open. And I will venture to say the Biden global-socialist regime will do everything to force Taiwan to accept a harsher form of One-China. The folks at Brookings can’t wait .
So Taiwan must be resilient until the next America-First administration come into power.
Everything has changed. The Trump administration proves that there exists more than one form of formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, and that Presidential visits between US and Taiwan are entirely possible even without the precondition of US and Taiwan signing anything such as a treaty, an agreement, or a joint communique.
The second thing that has changed by the Trump administration is that it is now open knowledge that US needs not feel obliged to help China’s effort in"de-platforming Taiwan". US can purse a America-First principle rather than a “Chinese sensitive first” dogma.
Taiwan’s government expressed “understanding and respect” for the decision, but also regret.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets that the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft cannot lead a delegation to visit Taiwan from Jan. 13 to 15 as scheduled, but welcomes Ambassador Craft to visit at an appropriate time in the future,” it said in a statement.
Between this and Biden’s picks for secretary of defense and CIA director, it’s looking more likely that Biden’s approach to China will be closer to the ineffectual one Obama had.
That’s right. When they find themselves in a less dominant position, for example in the international arena, the Communists, including the Chinese Communists, oppose nationalism (hereby implied is US nationalism or any nationalism of a stronger Western state).
Why so? That’s because the Communist state needs to present itself as the Oppressed. And by the Communist logic who is the oppressor? US is the oppressor (implied here is US Nationalism)
But in the domestic setting where the Chinese Communists have achieved total control and total power, their excuse to impose totalitarianism is based on the narrative of Chinese nationalism.
For international affairs, the Chinese Communists demand from the international interlocutors “equity” based on race. The Chinese race.
For domestic totalitarian control, the Chinese Communist demand from the Chinese people “Chinese nationalism”.
I can tell you are not well versed in Marxist doctrines.
The Chinese Communists Party-State is essentially “National Socialists” in domestic sense but “International Socialists” when they act as a state actor in the international arena.
Since the world (and Congress) has changed drastically on China these past five years), we can’t depend completely on his past record (or the past records of anyone he’s appointed).
I have no doubt that the Biden will downgrade Taiwan to a level worse or equal to the1996-2000 Clinton era. There could very well be another Three-No’s, another sino-US joint communique, or suspension of major arm sales. Meng Wanzhou will go free, TikTok, Dji and Huawei will be embraced again, and China will be included in WTO2.0 aka TTP-plus-China.
Chinese SOE will enjoy unfettered access to US capital.
And China will supply US with solar panels AND battery cells below cost to fulfill the Amercian Leftist “Green Deal” utopia. Also China will enjoy unfettered access to DARPA funded engineering projects.
In exchange, a few Uyghur and Hong Koners will be released.
