They’re not moving into the centre. People here support being their own country as Taiwan.
They’re being practical as they want to ensure China makes the first move so the US will support.

Yes ROC is Taiwan and Taiwan is the ROC and is separate from China. Compromise, everyone is happy. TI was a big thing a decade ago.

84% of the population supported Tsai’s speech. She is at an all-time high. I get some people are still in the romantic Roxy99 Taidu view of taiwan, but thats not where we are right now. There were more ROC flags than ever at the 10/10, Tsai mentioned ROC more than ever. The KMT are pissed off , because they feel that she has kidnapped the ROC. Amazing chess move on her part.
And remember what she said was:

ROC and PRC are mutually exclusive.
Note she said ROC and not Taiwan. Not even ROC Taiwan.
So thats where we are. ROC is Taiwan, Taiwan is the ROC. Everyone is happy and now the country can start focusing on other things.
You think keeping Taiwan in a limboland makes people happy? The lack of recognition, the lack of solid support, the oppression tactics from China, the harassment? They voted for her because they want to be Taiwanese. Most people don’t support changing the constitution now because they rightfully want to be independent with their lives and feel being practical and shoring up any support possible is better than declaring independence now if we can get more support later.
People still have lives and jobs.

Well I did say anecdotally. Hope you’re right but I think most Taiwanese pay lip service to multiculturalism and being a different culture but the belief doesn’t run deep and it won’t take root if they aren’t vigilant.

I follow opinion polls and news shows. I watch mostly the green shows and also the blue ones. There is consensus on this. Was a genius move from Tsai. The only people pissed are the KMT and a few old greens.
Listen, if TI or even the name changing stuff was a big vote winner, she would go in that direction, but its not. I studied Anthro here and my classmates were hardcore Taidu, always talking about changing flags and 10/10 wasnt their holiday. A decade later, I see them at the parade and generally cool with the new societal consensus.
At the end of the day, Huadu is Taidu. Whats most important is that there is unity against Beijing.

Ok, but its not a big thing now, compared to a decade ago. You dont see people marching like before. You dont see conversations about design of the flag. You dont see young people not wanting to participate in 10/10 or burn the flag. You do see blue people on Green shows and people agreeing that their position is basically the same. You do see people saying they are bored of the culture wars.
The more Tsai has gone into the political center, the more popular she has become. And I think its a good thing. There are bigger fish to fry. Whats important is that everyone agrees that the ROC/Taiwan/ROC Taiwan is seperate from China and doesnt want to be ruled by China.
There is such a thing as Co-option. They co-opted the flag. They’re slowly removing the KMT’s ownership on it.
