Making porn with your students

I expect this will end up in fhe flounder bin, but I’ll start it here because it doesn’t really fit any one category. It embraces relationships, art, money, living in TW, teaching, and others.

And no, it’s not quite what the title suggests.

I have a small group of extremely interesting students. Adult professionals with outgoing personalities and enquiring minds. Adventurous, and incidentally all female. They’re fairly liberal, feminists, and artistic too. I really enjoy the classes with them and we do get into some quite deep topics.

Last class we were talking about motivations and values, the important things that guide our decision-making. ie the ‘because’ that makes you choose a particular activity.*

One point that arose is that what you want, or value, is influenced by what you know and one of the girls then shared her ‘secret ambition’. She is an artist, and she wants to communicate something that will change society - or at least the part of society that gets her message. And the particualr issue she wants to address is the unequal status of most relationships in Taiwan. (I’m only repeating what I was told. I don’t know much about the truth or otherwise of this opinion.)

She feels that porn is made for men, and always objectifies women for men’s gratification. As a result, most women are not really aware that there is a higher ideal to aim for. And so she wants to make a porn movie for women, one which features a woman having great sex and really enjoying it and feeling good about it.

I’m not quite sure how explicit she wants it to be, and she insists that it should be ‘art’ rather than just shagging. But she wants it to be ‘for real’.

This all came out of the blue, and I boggled for a while, but it’s quite an interesting idea and we talked about it a lot.

There are issues with raising money to make a picture like this, and then with distribution. It’s not a solo project, and she’s going to need a team with more than just artistic aspirations. And then she’ll need actors, as she sees her role as that of director.

As a ‘class project’ I think we might pursue this further, research all that’s involved, prepare a business plan, and just generally go forward as if it’s something we actually intend to do. We’re all intrigued by the concept and the process of taking an inspiration down the path towards realisation. OK, it’ll probably never get anywhere beyond the drawing board, but it might be a fun class.

So I’m looking for input, ideas, observations, opinions, and all the rest of it.

If you were going to make a porn movie with a message, and aim to not lose money on it, but were starting from scratch, how would you begin?

And, before anyone asks, yes, she asked me to be in it. I don’t think that was code for wanting a shag, and I don’t think it’s a good idea anyway, but it’s nice to be asked. :sunglasses:

*For instance, I sail because it’s an activity that combines quite a lot of thinking with physical activity, and it’s all about mastering your environment. With your two hands and a bit of grey matter you can control your situation to achieve your goal. The ‘root’ therefore is control and the overcoming of a challenge. Sailing is only one way to pursue the real goal, it’s not the important thing in and of itself.

hmmm, this issue has been quite heavily discussed in non-asian porn circles for years. whilst i am certainly no expert on the results in the west in terms of ‘porn for women’ i think most feminists would argue its still focussed for men (female forumosans pls correct me if i am wrong).

from discussions i have had on this very topic with my feminist friends, they think the most liberating thing lately has been the increasing prevelance of ‘home porn’ tapes being made ‘available’ online. you know, real couple sharing their home videos etc. the trouble with anything with a biz plan is that it ends up being about $$… and a sa result the foucs, no matter how noble gets diluted and ends being yet another male dominated porn video.

research some of the new age pron available.

I think she’s on to something. Tell her to check out Jenna Jameson’s stuff. I hear she’s really in charge with her productions and the directing of her videos. Also, she only uses her husband as a partner.

I think it would be great to make a porn movie that doesen’t objectify sex, period. Porn in general IMO just sullies the act reducing it to something like making a baloney sandwich. I’d watch porn if it would had more depth to it. You know, not all artsy fartsy but done to evoke the emotions and all that…

here here… but how?

here here… but how?[/quote]For a start it could have a story. Make it as a romantic film, not a porn film, but then show what a loving couple gets up to the in the bedroom, and make it realistic.

You might get more romance than sex in the film, but is that a problem ?

I’m sure this has been done in the West. It has certainly been discussed a lot on late night TV shows in the UK. one of the issues is that traditional purchasers of Porn have been men, so marketing to women is seen as risky. Of course many women love porn, but they are watching the male oriented variety so one wonders again whether these same women would buy porn of a different bias. What is not counted on is the number of men who would watch for educational purposes…hoping to learn to please their lady(ies). One of the best ever selling DVDs in the UK was the Joy Of Loving which used a loophole in the law to sell hard core sex as educational, which kind of proves the market I think.

Erm, apart from hiring a camera and lighting, scripting (go all you English teachers), I think the biggets problem is distribution. The Internet may be the way to go but how to stand out from the billions of gigs of “normal” porn? Maybe viral networking would solve the solution. I bet you could get a cast and crew through Forumosafieds…

many have tried this and failed. they always descend into the usual fare.

Well, the problem about making a ‘woman-centric porno’ is the way ‘men’ are viewed in the world at large. Men are dogs who happily play hide the sausage with anything that has the right equipment. Truly then it is the men who are the objects here. The women are smart because they are making money from the weak impulses of dog-men. All porn objectifies men, and makes women look smart.
Tell your student to look at it that way, or suggest she is a lesbian.

BlunderHill.

Doesn’t have to be lovely dovey. Here’s a good example to start with. I saw “Alfie” this weekend. The scene with Jude Law and Nia Long getting it on on a pool table was rather erotic to me. IT was the editing that worked.

Problem with porn is like a girl who shows everything and wonders why no guy is taking her seriously- it leaves nothing to the imagination. And it’s the imagination that gets everyone aroused in the first place. The anticipation of what’s to come.

Back in college, I was dating some girl was taking an Intro to Women’s Studies course. One of the other students was writing a paper on “porn for women” and did a screening of these movies, so we went down and checked it out. The movie wasn’t bad, considering it was low-budget porn. It had some silly story about a couple who are on the outs and about to divorce. They accidentally stumbled upon a magic blanket that makes whoever touches it horny and then they use this to get back together. Not exactly Citizen Kane, but there was chemistry between the actors (I think the actors were real-life couples) and you could actually sit through the non-sex parts.

I could certainly see how this would be much more appealing for a couple to watch together than the average “made for men” porn, which typically involves mechanical sex with the camera zoomed in on the genitalia.

exactly… but without going overly into male/female stereotypes here - what women want to see V what men want to see will always be different yeah?

Not to burst anyone’s bubble, however believe it or not - making porn in Taiwan is something which you can do time for - I kid you not.

So… a piece of advice - shoot the saucier bits in a location, where that’s not a problem.

She wants to market to women, for women.

I’ve met girls in the past who have told me that they watch gay male porn because at least that way they get to watch a good-looking guy rather than an ‘average’ male on the periphery of the action, which is the girl.

So that politician a few years ago with the hot home movie…did she get busted?

Oh, no she did not on that account, however none of the actors were aware that they were making a porn movie.

The male “actor” left Taiwan for a period of time, as he was married, which cold have got both of them into deep dodo.

Wowsers! So she could have gotten busted for the adultery thing and the porn thing but walked away scot free?

OK so the whole personal sex tape on the internet must have been a bit embarrassing but better than doing hard time surely?

If a well known foreign male would be acceptable, count me in. I think something like this could be relaxing, romantic and rewarding.

Relaxing - hardly, they are a nightmare
Romantic - oh please
Rewarding - possibly

Errm, making port with your students???

I guess that you will have a fair bit of explanation to do, once the buxiban or the families find out.
