That’s a big one, but in addition there are all sorts of reasons. Bear in mind that it’s one of the busiest borders in the world with over 200 million crossings per annum. Also bear in mind that for local rights a HK id is not as good as a local hukou, but is better than an out of town Hukou. HKers have, if anything, better freedom of movement within China compared to mainland Chinese

Yeah if they are desperate enough . It’s not the same as moving in your own country though. China is ‘supposed’ to be their country too but it’s not .
If they are on some kind of surveillance list (and they will be when their faces get scanned or they get arrested), forget about it.
Those pissed off and disenfrachised may try to emigrate to a third destination such as Taiwan or Canada etc etc.
I know lots of HKers they’d still rather send their kids to UK or US for education and same for emigration .

Most in HK would not be able to send their kids abroad nor move to Canada, etc. as they are not the middle class.
