MOD (Media On Demand)

Oh, Sci Fi… that all of a sudden made MOD almost interesting, but which one is it? I would presume it’s the Singaporean one, or?
Has the quality gotten any better?

Wouldn’t know if it was. But we’re in Asia, so I think it’s likely.

We signed up for the 2nd tier package including NGC channels in HD, and the seven other channels… it’s about $220 a month I think… we enjoy the better quality broadcasts even though the TV we have isn’t HD… The sound quality is MUCH better.

There isn’t much HD broadcasting in Taiwan… but with multi- Discovery channels on cable, it’s possible to get some better English language TV.

Still, would like to have satellite, but it’s not an option here.
MOD is particularly singled out, but it affects other service providers like Far Eastone, etc.

However, it does raise the question: are these guys paying for all rights of broadcast in teh material used on MOD? :ohreally:
All the news channels like Aus NEt Aljazeera DW BBC CNN Euro News are all free to air channels no need to pay for them… you just pay mod to watch them as it costs mod to rebroadcast them

You dont need Satellite… Why dont you just do a streaming system to get everything. Do it from your relatives place back home

Is it possible to record programming off of MOD? Anyone know how? There is a USB port on the box but as far as I can see this is for displaying files such as .jpg format pics.

Hi everyone,

I’ve been thinking about getting MOD just to watch the FIFA world cup. At the moment i have Kbro but i heard that on MOD you guys can watch soccer in HD.

Which package should i get? I don’t think i’ll keep it after the world cup since i already have Kbro.
Do they charge anything if i want to cancel it after like a month?

Cheers

Hah! I wish I could. My mother has a fancy pc that she used as a typing instructor, and to write the occasional report. She can barely send email. Anything else requiring maintenance or connectors or what not… it’s just not feasible.

My father’s even worse. Wouldn’t know how to start a modern pc.

Sorry. Unless someone can do it for me, I can’t get my relatives to do it!

Just found out they have English commentary, too. Costs you 90NT a month for the basic channels.

How do you activate English commentary? It is really annoying to watch matches in Mandarin especially you don’t know Chinese like me.

I don’t know about all the channels, but for the World Cup just press the # button (bottom right of the MOD controller) and it toggles between English and Chinese commentary.

Note that the switch can be a little sluggish. Give it a second or two.

I watched the USA-Slovenia game and the English commentary was gone for a few minutes when the US-team shot the second goal. That was a a bit of a strange experience, the highlight of the match and all to the sound of just vuvuleza noise…

MOD has lost sound on several occassions. It doesnt matter you can still watch.

You can hook an MOD box into your PC as long as you have a TV Input card in your pc.
But then you would only be able to change the channels via the MOD box, right? So no scheduled recording or something like that.
Unless you’d get an IR blaster, to control the MOD box somehow. Is it possible to get this in a computer store in Taipei?

I want to control a MOD box while outside of Taiwan and tried to purchase this here yesterday:
monday.com.tw/gdsale/gdsale. … t=gdsearch

No luck though - the only brands available seem to be known solely in Taiwan. Which makes me not too hopeful regarding quality, driver support
etc. (On the other hand “Monday” seems to only have slow shipping - too slow for me to get the stuff before I leave on Wednesday.)

Anyone know of a more suitable computer store? I tried everything in Bade Road and Nova.

Guang Hua Market 3rd floor, look for a brand called AverMedia. They make good TV tuner cards.

I’m surprised that in 8 pages of this thread, no one has mentioned the karaoke function. Problem is I can’t access it as I don’t read enough chinese to get past the remote and GUI so I can only participate at family gatherings.

It’s nice to watch Outrageous Fortune and Blood, Sweat and Takeaways, though. Personally, I couldn’t live with out it. I can flick between CNN on cable and Al Jazeera and get the spin and counter spin, nice. For 89NT/month, how can anyone begrudge it?

One of the annoying problems I had on it is that in my ignorance of Chinese characters and my randomly pressing buttons trying to access movies/porn, etc., strange things happen. Like the channel numbers change or Vietnamese subtitles show up on all the Australia Network programs.

You get a lot of choice and functionality on the system. If only I knew how to use it. It would be a lot more popular for expats in Taiwan if there was an English user interface or a guide on which button to push.

I watch the National Geographic channels, Nat Geo Adventure is a good one, a series about foreigners getting ‘banged up abroad’, it’s great to see idiots come from all over the world. Fox has some good crime programs, reruns of Seinfeld etc. Al Jazeera is not bad and BBC World is a step-above CNN. I still think their movie selection is pretty pathetic though, I’m not sure why that is as I thought it would make good business sense to be able to watch the latest videos. Also it woud be good to get a documentary channel, something I miss here. Finally I think their selection of so many 24 hour news channels is puzzling. If they had some more British channels and individual European/American channels instead it would be ideal.

We switched from cable service to MOD a few months ago and so far I have been pleased. Fox Crime is a lot of fun, and the news channels (in English) are more various than we had had before.
