Motorcycle day trips from taichung

hello…i have recently moved to taichung and am looking to do some day trips/or overnight motorcycle excursions leaving from taichung. if anyone could lend advice or point me to a similar posting, i’d appreciate the assistance.

as well, if anyone is like-minded in this pursuit, drop me a pm and maybe we could plan a trip together. peace out.

See this post of Plasmatron’s and mine underneath it for a start;

You’ll see I mentioned Huisun Forest Park. It’s a good 2 or more hours each way but a very nice place.

If you want to start more modestly, just go up Dongshan Road to the Dakeng area and explore. Some nice hikes up there too. (To get onto Dongshan Road, go east along Wenxin Road then cross Beitun. The road becomes Dongshan at that point. You need to keep on the road for 10 - 15 minutes before you get to the Dakeng area).

Joe, I thought you’d be responding soon. Listen to this guy, Bruin8, he’s a touring fiend.

Here’s the website for Huisun: huisun.nchu.edu.tw.

Joe, isn’t the Dakeng area where that orangutan attacked two old guys?

Well, I’d like to do more.

Yep, it was in Dakeng.

Go to Baishawan in Maoli County. It would take about three hours from taichung City. Not exactly a day trip but a good way to kill an afternoon. The beach is nice and uncommercialised.

I believe you mean Baishatun 白沙屯 (isn’t Baishawan a beach near Taibei?), which yes, is really nice on a sunny day, especially around the hills near the seacoast rail line.

I also recommened going up to Sanyi 三義 in Miaoli county, checking out the wood carving there, then take the mountain road between Sanyi and Dahu 大湖 (a great road to ride if you have a real cycle with actual accelerating power), stopping at a tea house in the mountains, and then riding around the Liyutan 鯉魚潭reservoir before you go back to Taizhong.

At Sanyi you can also walk along 12km of abandoned railway tracks through the countryside. Nice afternoon hike.

If you’re going to go as far as Dahu drive up county road 62 to check out Taian. Lots of great hiking here as well as a number of hotspring hotels. Camping is possible too.

At the start of county road 62 is the headquarters for Sheiba National Park. Check to see is the newest public section of the park, Syuejian recreation Area, has opened yet. If it is, you’ll be able to drive to it from Taian area.

Syuejian sounds pretty cool as they have been working on a number of old trails including one 35km route formally used by the Japanese to police the aborginals.

Woops maybe I do mean Baishatun. It’s a secret place that not many people go to. Yeah there is a Baishawan in Taipei. Never been there so no comment except for Taipei is a long ride from Taichung.

However Baishawan is a fairly common name for beaches here in Taiwan. There is also a Baishawan in the Kenting region
