New Youtube Series - "WHO SPEAKS THE BEST MANDARIN IN TAIWAN"

【誰才是中文最好的外國人?】

It’s a competition show about Mandarin proficiency. It’s nice seeing so many fluent speakers of mandarin. Episode 1 was released one day ago. Are you going to follow along the series?

I can imagine the outcry if they tried a show like this in an English speaking country.

Not necessarily a knock against the program, mind you. Chinese is a notoriously difficult language and the vast majority of foreigners only manage a very basic level which they speak atrociously. So “Which foreigner speaks the best English in New Zealand?” is a kiwi fruit to betel nut comparison.

i mean just looking at it sociolinguistically, it wouldn’t work because of English being an unofficial language in most colonized countries. also english speaking countries (the US especially) expect their immigrants to speak english, other places don’t care at all.

No. The symbolic letting the monkeys out of the cage intro was about as far as I got.

The racialist overtones are pretty cringe, and the NT$300,000 grand prize is insulting, although par for the course for a cheap-ass Taiwanese game show.

Watched the first episode last night because my wife was curious. Would be more interesting if the didn’t include so many YouTubers. I think the later rounds will be more interesting as it will just be people whose Chinese is actually good.

Yeah, I’m more interested in the 1st/2nd round winners whose jobs all sounded much more local.

This show is really just a best-of of all the most annoying people who show up in my feeds at times. Playing along with the first game sure left me feeling pretty embarrassed though!

This is just Ku trying to be like Mr. Beast. Apparently he spent 5 mil on the show.

If the show was produced by a local media conglomerate, then it would feel much more cringe. However, Ku, a fellow Mandarin learner is the one who produced the show, it’d be like having a who speaks the best English show produced by Melania, no judgement or racism involved, except that contestants may be too afraid to be deported to show up.

What are the criteria for being a contestant?

Presumably they filtered out foreigners who were born in Taiwan and natively speak Chinese.

No, it’s clearly aimed at locals. Might watch the first one if my wife is interested.

Chinese is not that difficult to learn and a good few foreigners speak it to a reasonable level.

I can’t stand him, it seems to me that he thinks he’s very important person in Taiwán

I didn’t even get past all the Mandarin masturbation in the introduction.

Ever the contrarian, I would be more entertained on exposes into the long term foreigners who haven’t learned it and why. Entertaining indeed.

Why is the wai guo ren produced content in Taiwan such base level trash?

Why dont we have somebody like say, abroad in Japan?

Honestly I can’t watch any of them.

And my bar isnt high by any means. I like watching people eat stuff as much as anyone else but even that type of content is unwatchable here.

He’s one of the few youtubers in Taiwan willing to risk raising the production value of his videos. Whether he is important or not is irrelevant. If he manages to pull this off time after time, he will be important. If he eventually can’t draw enough eyeballs to his new projects, at least he tried. I don’t see many other Taiwanese youtubers attempting something like this.

Aside from Brian and the STR network he’s affiliated with, and maybe Chien-Chien who also attempted a larger scaled game show prior to the pandemic, most people stop short of what put Ku on the map, giving people an all-expenses-paid-for tour of Taiwan.

Cha bu duo la. Every foreign youtuber apes local media and aims at a local audience because thats what has been successful.

My wife and daughter like watching him. He follows the “foreigner with good Chinese who says nice things about Taiwan” model and has done very well for himself, so good for him.

Impossible to get 99% of the users here to participate.

its obvious that he just invited a ton of his content creator friends to play. so the cash prize is low bc of that
