Olympics Opening Ceremony - and games
China was celebrating its “return” to greatness. That was their trip. The Brits were celebrating their own cultural heritage, which included some light-hearted moments. I don’t see a problem.
Nope no probs except the Brits were boring!

Like he said, we were celebrating our cultural heritage

I didn’t have a clue what was going on until someone explained it to me later. Personally I have huge respect for olympic athletes and what they do, but the hype, mess, moneywasting and sordid commercialism that surrounds the Games spoils the whole thing. They should all be naked and competing for a laurel wreath. Things just ain’t what they used to be. :grandpa:

hope to catch the closing ceremony tomorrow.

Extremely sad decision not to finish the marathon inside the stadium. From what I can see, it was decided that having the runners go from the City of London out east to the stadium would take the runners through some distressed looking areas (Whitechapel Road etc.). Unsuitable for a worldwide audience, apparently. A very poor choice, organisers should’ve just manned up about the reality of London as a city, and shown us warts and all.

Surely that’s one of the most iconic moments of any Olympics, the final 600m of the marathon, around the track.

Fail.

I really don’t understand why there is so much controversy over the opening ceremonies. I’ve never liked the opening ceremony but the games themselves have been great.

Awesome men’s mountain bike. Great course, great race.

  They’re proud of their heritage!!! Why would they show us their short comings??? Bloody regimented, hypocrites. They will never let the media see their warts and they want to present the image of a clean, perfect China. Sorry London

Been enjoying watching glimpses of these games (we have it on at work) , gonna miss em.

Was wondering. You know they play the national anthems of the winners? What if Taiwan gets a gold. What will they play? They cant play the kwoh keh, so what then? YankeeDoodle goes to town? Or how bout the China Airlines theme song? Or Chiukan tan bwey boh?

Knowing the Olympic committee, they will probably just play China’s national anthem.

very true.

Yes, a big mistake imo too. Surely after running 26 miles the runners deserved a cheer from the 80,000 people in the stadium. I’m not sure of the reason for the decision, though. There aren’t any parts of London that couldn’t be tarted up enough to be presentable, certainly there isn’t anywhere as bad as the worst areas of other some other Olympic cities.

I’ve been in the UK for some of the time the Olympics has been on and the reaction over there is overwhelmingly positive. The general public is loving it, and the boost to morale has been huge. Let’s hope there are some long term benefits too.

It was surreal coming out of London City airport though. I was kind of steeling myself for the sometimes brusque attitude of service staff, but they were all exceptionally polite and friendly. I wondered what was going on, then I realised that with the Olympics coming up they must all have been trained!

They have been well organized, well done to the Brits for pulling it off. You lot had home advantage so don’t get too cocky with yer medal haul okay .

the closing ceremony is already over but here its going to be on tv in bout ten mins.
IM perched on my chair ready to watch it.

congrats to the UK for coming in 3rd in the medals haul (a best they have ever done i think?)
and for doing such a good job holding the games.

have u guys seen the closing ceremony? Any good?

I’m watching right now (kind of). I hope the Spice Girls crawl back into the hole that they have been hiding in but other than it’s fine/good.

The show started on tv for us at 830pm local time. And we are ten mins into it and on the act by STOMP at moment. So far , just Loving It. Its pretty awesome so far. If it continues like this it will rival beijings closing ceremony .

edit: Ok finished watching , thought it was pretty awesome. Helped on by dead (but still loved) rockers.

good job Brits !

Oh, come on. we’ve got to have something to get cocky about.

Apparently at one point just the county of Yorkshire had more medals than Australia.
