Which is a proper word for carrot? Or both correct?
In cantonese, supposed to be 红萝卜.
紅蘿蔔 in Taiwan.
And 胡蘿蔔 is also used.
Just for laughs, it’s 紅菜頭 in Taiwanese.
It’s a you say tomato I say tomato situation.
Whether or not it would sound weird in Taiwan depends on how you say 蘿蔔. If you say 蔔 with the “neutral tone” (short and with a glottal stop), then it would sound as weird to Taiwanese as writing it as 萝卜.
Also commonly referred to as lîn-jín, from Japanese ninjin, which has the Kanji of 人参, which actually means Ginseng in the rest of Asia.
Interesting, but I don’t recall hearing that up in these parts!
Looking around a bit, but somehow neither made it to this interesting list Just wondering if there could be some regional variation here.

Both forms are correct…Some days I see them stick 紅蘿蔔 on the basket & other days they stick 胡蘿蔔…
紅菜頭 is also Cantonese for Beetroot.
Didn’t realize carrots were so interesting in Taiwan except maybe to the 兔子.
Tonight I asked a teacher and some students, and they seemed in agreement that both 胡 (hú) and 紅 (hóng) were acceptable in Taiwan.
all textbook refer carrot as 胡. glad to know 紅 is correct too

For the sake of accuracy, I think the name should be changed to 橘蘿蔔.
胡 is where they come from.
古 月 it’s not a 菜頭 come from. 橘菜頭It’s color of it too.
