Sure, but there was no invasion of HK merely a peaceful transfer of sovereignty in 1997. The crackdown of late has been performed by Hong Kong people on themselves and in quite a limited way. It is a completely different scenario to invading another nation, that has its own army, and what follows from that. Cultural similarities aside.
When Saigon fell, many men and some women were placed in re-education camps, some for years. And there were retributions etc. The two sides shared the same culture and there were families across both sides.
