These comments might have simply meant that you’re too direct and you don’t help others to save face.
But the speaker couldn’t say so directly. They were trying to “save face” and avoid embarrassing you (or themselves), so they euphemistically said that you are too genuine or unconventional.

Thinking out of the box is mostly a great trait, but if the employer can’t handle that, you definitely want to take your talent elsewhere. Important to have space to grow and air to breathe.
